You Give Me Fever

Posted by Adrienne Martini

I am a Bad Mommy.  When my kids get sick, I never, ever take their temperature. I'm not even sure that there is a kid-friendly thermometer in my house right now.

It's not that I don't care about their health; it's just that I've never found any of the ear or armpit or temple thermometers all that accurate or effective. This CNN piece on how to take a temp might offer some advice for moms like me -- or give a refresher course to moms who like to know exactly how hot their kid is.

It won't change my approach, however. If either of my kids is lethargic enough to hold an oral thermometer under his or her tongue, then the fever is high. And if they'll remain still enough to have it taken rectally, well, we should already be in the car on the way to the ER.

You're not the only bad mommy!  When my pediatrician asks one of my tribe's temperature, I honestly answer, "I noticed it."

I, too, never take my daughter's temp, mainly becasue I know when she has a fever. End of story. It doesn't matter if it is 99 or 101. As long as it is responsive to whatver OTC sugary medicine I give her, I just do not worry about it. So, keep on keeping on!

I don't take temps either.  Kids can have temps of 101-102 and still be quite fine.  I rely more on activity level and general well-being.  You're dead on with this.

I have never taken a rectal temp and I don't plan to. Ever.

I've never actually taken a rectal temp. If I suggest it and get no resistance, I *know* the kid has a high fever and I should be doing something about it.

THanks for the support, y'all!
