Do As I Say, Not As I Do

Posted by Amy S.F. Lutz

Here's a role reversal for you:  students at a Shawnee, Kansas school are protesting because alcohol will be served to parents at a PTA fundraiser.

The students, from Prairie Ridge Elementary School, feel that by drinking at a school-sponsored event, their parents would be sending the wrong message about drinking and driving.  They firmly deny critics' claims that their righteous objections are motivated purely by fear that the adults will get toasted and tell embarrassing stories about them, like how they used to run around naked.

The PTA had no comment, but I'm guessing if they did, it would be something like, "This is Kansas!  What else is there to do?" *

*Note to our Kansas readers:  No, it never gets old.  Sorry.

Amy, I actually live not only in Kansas, but about 10 miles from this school, and I'll give it to you, there isn't a lot else to do.  And, it's kind of how you get people to show up.  Sad, but true.

In all seriousness, the event is not being held on school property and is more of an adults only event, I don't think there is anything wrong with serving alcohol.  I personally can't imagine making through one of these events without at least one glass of wine!!

More than 10 years ago, the Mother's Club at my high school sanctimoniously declared that they would no longer serve wine at their yearly adults-only luncheon because they thought it set a bad example for their teenagers (drinking during the day, drinking during social events, etc.).  My mother reports that that's when she stopped attending or donating.

You know the teenagers in Kansas are just doing it to needle the parents.  Parents declaring such standards on themselves is far more ridiculous in my book.

Sixty years ago, when I was young and growing up in a small North Central Kansas town, school children presented one act plays, choirs, or Carol Marie would read a meaningful chapter from a currently popular novel.  I was bored.

But, when I think back about those events, the focus was on parent/teacher relationships with their children's  schools.  What is the focus of the Shawnee school's parents, and teachers?  PTA must have changed it's creed sometime after my time.

Gee this is a tough one (snark snark)... If the parents truly want to set a good example for their children they should enjoy the party responsibly, alcohol included (provided they are over 21) and, chip in on taxis or charter a bus...or heaven forbid designate a driver

Just because they are parent’s doesn’t mean that they don’t have to follow the "house rules" or THE LAW...
