Springing Forward Makes Mommy and Daddy Cry

Like taking candy from a baby, easy but oh so very mean.  Taking sleep and time away from busy parents is a cruel trick of Daylight Savings, even with the energy saving benefits and more light in the evening results.

It's well-established most parents are sleep-deprived on some level especially in that first year of baby's life.

Apparently, the trouble with changes wrought by Daylight Savings Time go beyond insufficient sleep for a few days...

The trouble caused by switching the daylight hours forward so that one has more light in the evening, has a deleterious effect on one's body clock.   You can move all the stylish wall-clocks forward all you like, but your circadean rhythms will be screaming at you that it is still Winter.

Add the usual degree of parental sleep deprivation and it's enough to want to consume a melatonin smoothie the size of Manhattan and feed the nice children some special medicine.

We need sleep, people! Daylight Savings is an enemy to busy parents everywhere and it must be stopped!

It is also the screwiest "Energy Policy" I've ever heard of.  We have an energy crisis - I know, let's CHANGE TIME!!! Sensible leadership at its finest!

Blah. It's a big deal if you make it one. Yeah it sucks, but we all get over it and eventually appreciate the extra sunlight.

I have to say, I was dreading it (our first spring forward with Gussie) but today was not a problem. She woke up a bit late for her (almost 8! alleluia!) then skipped her morning nap, went down for her afternoon nap at 1 (an hour ahead of usual in real time, but just on the dot according to the clock) and then went to bed about 10 minutes late. Of course, tomorrow morning might be another story.

Maybe I'll be so lucky that she'll adopt today's schedule as her regular sleep schedule. hahahaha

M has some kind of screwy internal clock that announces the time change a week or so in advance by waking up at 4am.  At least I can pretend it is really 5 now....

Actually, by the time summer hits, I am NOT thankful for the extra daylight.  Still 80 degrees at 10 pm is not fun...what about 4th of July--having the kids begging for fireworks for hours before it's actually dark.  Not to mention the fact that it's dark now when I get up--no sunshine streaming in the window telling me, "What a beautiful day it is going to be!"  Besides, they've shown that people use just as much energy after the clock jumps forward...driving around in their cars later in the evening because, hey! it's still daytime, let's go DO something!!!

MamaS,  you must be on the western edge of your time zone.  Where I grew up, it didn't get dark in the summer until 10pm.  Here in the eastern edge of the same time zone, summertime is dark at 9pm and, here's the worst part, in the late fall through February, it is dusk when my kids get off the bus at 4 and fully dark before 5pm. Awful!  My kids are thrilled today just to be able to play outside after school.
