Fighting Cavities? Eat Candy!

Posted by Madeline Holler

Despite all the brushing and flossing and nagging and trips to the dentist, most kids are going to get a cavity sometime before they reach adulthood. But one doctor has developed a cavity fighting method that he thinks is going to revolutionize dental hygiene for everybody.

A lollipop.

Dr. Wenyuan Shi developed the cavity-fighting, anti-germ lollipop using herbs and techniques from Chinese medicine. He tested 2,000 herbs and conducted 50,000 experiments with them and supposedly found a natural cavity fighter -- licorice.

Shi put the compounds into lollipop form because of the candy's universal appeal to people of all ages. And because they wouldn't have to be FDA approved. (Yes, but can we see some tests? Or does he make one in snake oil flavor, too?).

His proposed regimen would be two lollipops a day for 10 days, four times a year. He does not recommend altering the habit of brushing and flossing twice daily.

Shi is doing more studies on the lollipops, but they're already for sale under the name Dr. John's.

Report back if you try them. I'm intrigued.

I don't know if I could get my kids to eat licorice-flavored lollipops twice a day, even if they are "candy". Another tip...

Sugar free gum containing xylitol (we like Carefree Coolers) is also good for teeth, especially newly emerged adult teeth.

I'm still waiting for the headline that tells me to lose weight by eating chocolate.

Does anyone know the brand name for those lollipops?

I need to buy my kids those and see if they work!

The candies are not licorice flavored, so rest easy there.  I'm not sure of the name or where you can purchase them.

I'm still a fan of xyltiol products.  6 - 10 grams per day for a year will cover you for nearly a decade. We only think 10 years because no one has looked further.  Gum, candy, toothpaste, gels are all good options for supplying xylitol to the mouth.

www.sprydental.com has a large variety of products, there are others as well.

Carefree Koolers are no longer available, switch to Ice Breakers Cubes - look for xylitol as the first ingredient when choosing OTC gums.
