Easter: Bunny or Jesus?

Little Easter bonnets and dresses seem overkill for the neighborhood egg hunt, so the thought that maybe we should go to church has flitted across my mind.  Not wanting to be a fairweather churchgoer, hitting church for only the big holidays seems a little shallow.

And it shortcuts the bigger question.  What do I tell my kids about Easter?  Some people (like grandma and grandpa and your Mormon relatives) believe Jesus rose from the dead on this day?

What do you tell yours?

Do you just let the Easter Bunny do all the talking?

...such an early Easter makes us nearly regular church-goers.

Honestly, I wish Christmas and Easter people would stay home from church.  I really resent having to show up to church half an hour early (or more, on Christmas) just so I have a place to sit.

Rachael, you would be more than welcome at the church we attend no matter how often (or not!) you want to come.

The baby Jesus will accept straying flock, especially at the anniversary of the sacrifice HE made for all the heathens and nay sayers!

Mom2Two, don't you think the one hour a year you sacrifice to get to church and get a seat pales in comparison to Jesus' sacrifice.......?! He laid down his life for you......

You misunderstand me, LogicalMama.  I go to church because I LIKE to.  It means a lot to me.  So I resent having to stand, even though I arrived early, because people are there because they feel obligated.  Last Christmas, we went for the caroling, we arrived 45 minutes early and still had to stand.  And most of the people seated were not paying attention to the music and/or talking so loudly I couldn't hear.

Tell your kid what you believe.  Depending on the age, you can also just go straight historical on them, including the pagan aspects, resurrection of Jesus AND the Easter bunny.  Give them the facts (but again that would be too much for little ones).

Also, what's up with the trend to dismiss Christianity as an old person's religion?  "Grandma and grandpa and your Mormon relatives"?  My church, which we attend weekly, is full of young couples, many older people and about 2.5 million children and teens.
