Lord Of The Flies Plays Out In Georgia

Posted by Amy S.F. Lutz

No one's head ended up on a stick - but it surely wasn't due to the lack of a very impressive and coordinated effort on the part of nine Georgia third-graders.

School officials at Center Elementary School believe the students were mad at their teacher for punishing one of them with a time-out.  In retaliation, the students concocted a plan involving a knife, handcuffs, duct tape, a crystal paperweight and a ribbon - all of which were recovered from the students, who have been suspended and may be expelled pending the police investigation.

You've got to be impressed with the solidarity of these children, sticking up for their own.  Still, I'm thinking the class would probably benefit from a lesson in non-violent protest - sit-ins, boycotts, those kinds of things.  I think Martin Luther King Jr. himself would be the first to acknowledge that injustice has never been righted with a ribbon and a paperweight.

Once again the media blows it all out of proportion.  Well, actually some of it is just silly.  The knife was broken off, teh handcuffs were not real, the ribbons are hardly a weapon, the duct tape was a small, used roll and they also had transparent Scotch tape.  This was just play acting and everyone is blowing it out of proportion.  The reason?  They are all special needs kids.  You know, those dangerous ADHD, Autism, ADD, and kids that are mouthy.  I bet half of them are just gifted and they are bored in school.  The media was looking for a story to show how crazy kids are a threat to society.  Eve the school thinks it is no big deal.  Sounds more like they were going to act out a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean. Good grief.  A paperwegith, scotch tape and ribbons?

Why not just give them a straight up paddling and call it a day? Expelled? Jeez.

Wow, speaking as an elementary school teacher, I'm just impressed that NINE 3rd-graders were able to cooperate enough to hatch a plan, albeit a fucked-up one.

Heh, like they wouldn't have been equally likely to get suspended or expelled for a sit in. Only terrorists use sit ins.

I haven't seen anything about what the teacher was like to prompt such a unanimous hatred? I would think that deserves a little looking into too.
