The Time Drain That is Baby-Naming

Posted by Madeline Holler

British parents spend 30 million hours each year coming up with the most brilliant, clever, success-inducing baby names ever. Or, at least that's the goal of spending all that time discussing the merits of Ruby over Grace or Thomas over Oliver.

Individually, couples are spending 45 hours -- per child -- agonizing over what to name their progeny.

Seems people in the U.K. think a baby's name determines in no small part its bearer's destiny. Hence, the time, the agony.

From Yahoo!:

One in three parents believed the right name can give a child confidence while up to two million thought it could help their child's career prospects.

Here's what they've come up with: Ruby, Grace and Olivia are the top three names for girls; Jack, Thomas and Oliver are the top three names for boys. (They should really spend more time (or would it be less?) on the Babble Baby Namer.)

The most ridiculous thing I've heard of is paying people to help you come up with a name for your kid, as if it's a product that needs to be marketed. The second most ridiculous thing is the current thread on mothering.com where a group of women are sharing their frustrations about average Americans not being able to pronounce their kids' uncommon (but oh-so-common in Wales, or Africa, or some other place) names. We named our son after his grandfathers--it took us all of 5 minutes to settle on it, and the biggest sticking point was which grandfather got the first name. We are very happy with his common-in-America name; I think it gives him the opportunity to be whoever he wants. Going forth into the great big world with a name like "Sequoia" or "Sunshine" points a kid in a direction that maybe s/he'd rather not take.
