Officials Want Sect Kids to be Raised Like Hippies

Posted by TheNewsJunkie

Child welfare officials in Texas are trying hard to accomodate the bajillion kids rescued from an FLDS compound. Not only have they ordered officials to keep babies and their mamas together, but they're also trying to keep the older kids together in groups, so that they can go through the culture shock of modern American life with a bit of support from each other.

Officials have also asked the families and temporary shelters that are housing the kids to make some changes, which, to we civilians, might seem kinda kooky (and/or totally like babysitting the hippies kids from up the block):

No TV

No processed foods (only whole grains and fresh veg)

No public school -- instead, they're being asked to homeschool the kids

Here's where the FLDS part with the Whole Foods crowd, however: no red, anywhere. Not in pictures on walls, not in the furniture, not on clothing. Red, in this group, is the color Jesus will be wearing when he returns, and they don't want to get the signals crossed. Officials have asked families and shelters to remove all red from the homes.

Also, prarie dresses. The girls can only wear prairie dresses, which one foster parent points out aren't sold at Wal-Mart. So, I guess the good folks of Texas are going to haul out their sewing machines and remind themselves how to make a pintuck and gathered sleeve.
