Children of Men (for real): Japan's Child Pop. Drops for 27th Straight Year

Posted by Cole Gamble

While we in America like to celebrate the 5th of May by depositing large quantities of tequila into our stomach (just for safe keeping before we deposit said tequila in a toilet later that night), in Japan they celebrate Children's Day. Thing is, at the rate they are going, pretty soon they won't have anything to celebrate.

The population of children in Japan has declined for the 27th straight year in a row. The reasons are thought to be a product of modernization. I.E: as a country becomes richer, birth rates tend to decline. Yes, it's a stereotype but it is true, the poorer and less educated a population, the more kids get popped out.

The effects of such a decline in Japanese youths could potentially be disastrous. Just look at the fears we have with our own withering Baby Boomer generation. Time will come when the infirm and incapable will outnumber the vital and capable, and when it does, look out. It's simple math: when there are more people who are taking out of the system than there are people putting in, well everything kind of goes to hell.

The impact of this youth drain could prove dire for Japan, but at least they'll get watch us fall apart first. Maybe they can learn something from us as our capital building is transformed into a Denny's and the a street gangs of elderly men take to mugging innocent people for their precious Viagra money.

except when a rich country has policies and programs (parental leave, affordable childcare...) that support families. Case in point: Denmark

The number one method of birth control in Japan is elective abortion.  Most women will not take the pill because there are a lot of wives tales about it and they were not widely available until just recently after Viagra was released.  Adoption in Japan is rare and if a couple does adopt they usually try to pass the child off as biological.  Bloodlines are very important in Japan.  They are still stuck in the feudal times.  They actually have less children these days because it is very expensive to live in Japan and to send a child to school.  So they put all their eggs in one basket.

Oh, Casssie, the things that you write amuse me so.  Somehow I imagine the things you actually know about Japan could be written on the head of a pin.

Although elective abortion is certainly available in Japan without the drama that you find in the US, it is not the number one form of birth control.  Condoms are the most common.  Yes, low dose birth control pills were approved after the approval of Viagra, about 10 years ago, but the older, higher dose kind have been available for a very long time.  Part of the reason Japanese women don't take the pill is due to "old wives tales" like they cause you to gain weight, but the bigger reason is that Japanese people tend not to want to get on a medication when they are perfectly healthy, and they don't want to stay on a medication for long periods of time.  Adoption in Japan is rare because if a child is without parents some other family member usually steps in and takes care of the child.

The reasons there are fewer children born in Japan is very complicated and includes a whole long lists of economic and social reasons.  It can't be summed up so flippantly as "they are still stuck living in feudal times."

I appreciate your comment Sherry. Cassie, it's amazing how comfortable you feel making these sweeping generalizations. I am not a huge stickler for political correctness, but how about any kind of correctness?

About Cole Gamble

Cole Gamble is a writer in the environs of Portland, Oregon where he has two children, one he calls “Jillian” and the other he simply refers to as “The Beef.” His revolutionary parenting technique is a three-pronged system consisting of A) wrestling children for fun and profit; B) convincing his daughter she is a robot; and C) resisting the urge to beat up other four-year-olds when they tease his kids. Propagation of aforementioned children was assisted by his wife, Nicole, who is gorgeous but ironically hates being photographed. His writing has appeared in print, on various Internets and been transmitted into the air through the magic of the radio. Currently he is working on an evil self-help book titled Improve Your Life Or Die.
