Lactating Cop Nurses Earthquake Babies

Posted by Madeline Holler

Get ready to tear up and grab your nipples. A Chinese cop has been contributing to the earthquake relief effort in a very specific way: breastfeeding.

Jiang Xiaojuan started her unusual mission as a wet nurse just after pulling a three-month-old baby out of rubble the day the devestating earthquake flattened large parts of her Sichuan province and left thousands and thousands dead and homeless. After learning the baby's mother was missing, she decided to breastfeed the infant.

From Reuters:

The young police officer now spends her days breast-feeding other babies at local shelters, most of whose mothers are dead, missing or too tired to feed their children. More than 80,000 people are now confirmed dead or missing after China's worst earthquake in decades. The disaster has orphaned thousands of children.

Xiaojuan is the mother of a six-month-old boy, who, ironically, she barely gets to nurse these days -- something that clearly upsets here (watch the video). Still, something tells me the boy will understand, once he's old enough.

Would you volunteer your milky boobs to help other babies? I remember watching coverage of Katrina, my swollen boobs letting down all over the place, and thinking "I'd totally nurse those babies who had nothing to eat."

I think I'd prefer to pump and donate if possible, but yes I'd definitely feed babies other than my own in this type of situation.

Me, too. What a unique service to babykind. And how comforting.

Yes, of course I would breastfeed them. Think of how comforting it would be to these poor babies, who may never see their own mothers again. Obviously, one woman can't provide all the nutrition for tons of children, but she can do so much to make them feel safe and loved.

Absolutely- I'd nurse them if I could. Pumping and donating is a good idea. It's too bad there isn't a program available or that, but I guess it would be a logistical nightmare to collect all of those small amounts from all over the place.

I fail to understand why she should pump, for centuries the wealthy had wet nurses.  And I wonder if there would be any benefit in that whatsoever.  How would they go about cleaning, nevermind sterilizing, bottles.

What she is doing is nothing short of true heroism.
