Family Movie Night – Curious George

Posted by Brett Singer

Curious GeorgeI had seen Curious George when it first came out and didn't remember much about it. On a second viewing, it's actually quite cute. Despite giving the Man in the Yellow Hat a real name (Ted), and creating some cockamamie story about a museum and a giant monkey idol, the movie stays true to the spirit of the books without actually doing the stories themselves. This was a smart move, since stretching one of the ten page Curious George tales to 90 minutes would have probably have been pretty painful to sit through.

As Ted, Will Ferrell is somehow more subdued when rendered as an actual cartoon character, as opposed to the live action one he usually plays on screen. Drew Barrymore is very sweet in her usual role as every geek's dream woman. Even David Cross, as the son of the museum owner, is amusing. Very sweet, easy to watch with the whole family, enjoyed by younger and older child in attendance. Recommended.

UPDATE: Per mtlmama's comment below, the soundtrack is quite nice. I'm not a big Jack Johnson fan in general but his music works incredible well here.

This was my little girl's favorite show for awhile when she was 2ish.  She didn't get the sentence about George being a monkey able to do things we can't do.  She took to George as a role model and the writing was on the wall, LITERALLY.  Generally CG is harmless and I would recommend, unless your kid isn't old enough to distinguish reality from fiction.
