Drug Your Kids

Posted by Adrienne Martini

Rare is the parent who hasn't slapped a band-aid on a nonexistent boo-boo so that the crying would stop. But how far will you go to appease a kid with a minor -- or nonexistent -- complaint?

Jennifer Buettner is betting that some parents will go so far as to buy her new product, called Obecalp. It's a chewable, cherry-flavored dextrose tablet that you can safely give to your child when he or she is feeling poorly. Heck, you can give them two dozen of them with no ill effects. Obecalp (read it backwards) is little more than a sugar pill.

Which raises some interesting questions. Is it OK to convince kids that every minor complaint can be fixed with a drug? Or is it a harmless way to soothe a child's psyche?  What do you think?

I think it's a brilliant idea for money-making, and I almost wish I had thought of it (you know, for the money-making). I would not, however, use that pill with my kids. I really don't think it's ok to teach them that everything can be fixed with medicine, or that every complaint warrants taking medicine. I would worry that they might end up being pill-popping adults. I don't have a problem with excessive band-aid use, though.

It seems to work for the homeopathy industry.

I do that but I call it Faker Medicine.

It is a teaspoon of vinegar (that comes out of a different bottle).

You have a Faker Tummy Ache?  I know just the thing that will take care of it - Faker Medicine.

Most of the time now, the malady vanishes before the bottle even comes out of the cupboard.

However, I will admit to basically band-aiding an entire child if it will get them back to sleep at 3 am.

Leaving aside the question of whether or not it is ethical to give kids fake medicine for every ache and pain...  Tic Tacs are way cheaper. You could even use different colors/flavors for different ailments.  Yellow for tummy, green for head, etc.

I have often thought of trying to whip up some sort of sweet purple liquid to pour into an empty Tylenol bottle.  My daughter loves the taste of children's medicines so much that I wonder how many of her "headaches" are real and how many are concocted in order to get a taste of grape-flavored goodness.  Of course I wouldn't really do it for the same reasons that Manjari pointed out, but it would be nice if children's over-the-counter medications came in an "unflavored" version.  After all, I don't give my daughter food with artificial flavors, so why should I give her medications chock full of them?

Um, my 11-month-old twins settle down as soon as the Tylenol bottle comes into sight. Teething or sugar addiction? I would totally rock a placebo syrup, but I'm too chicken.

OK, treespeed...you've got me.  My 18-month-old is addicted to teething tablets.  I truly believe they actually work, but mainly when she was much, much younger.  Now, she just wants them any time she happens to see the bottle out. My mom is trained in homeopathic medicine so I know it won't actually hurt her to have the pills if she doesn't need them...unlike tylenol.  When she doesn't want to sleep in the middle of the night I've been known to pop a couple in her mouth..."all better, nigh-nigh, sweet-pea." I'm not proud of it, and I hope to detox her soon from her addiction, but I can see the demand for this type of thing.  BTW-my 9 year old won't even consider taking medicine unless she's, like, dying, so it won't work for all kids.
