I recently paid tribute to the South African child who survived a pregnancy spent in her mom's liver. Now Australia can claim another miracle baby.
When doctors started to perform a planned C-section yesterday on Meera Thangarajah, they discovered something astonishing: The infant girl was housed in her mom's right ovary, where she had apparently spent the entire term of the pregnancy. Such ectopic pregnancies are extremely rare and typically are life-threatening to mother and child.
Says Thangarajah's doctor: "This form of pregnancy is rare enough, but to have it go full term
is unheard of ... I have never come across it in any hospital."
Most of us tend to freak about any little abnormality when we're pregnant. And clearly, most of us prefer to go the normal, complication-free route. Still, the more I read stories like this, the more confidence I have that even when something does go awry, things can still turn out all right.
Of course, there is still that nagging question: How did no one realize the baby was in an ovary for nine straight months? Had this story lacked a happy ending, that issue would undoubtedly be plaguing this mother and father. Fortunately, all they have to worry about now is raising their sweet little newborn.
