Low Birth Weight Babies, Especially Girls, Likely to Develop Autism

Posted by Cole Gamble
The possible causes for autism grew by one today as new research finds babies born before term, underweight and especially female are twice as likely to develop autism… This is according to a report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although it is not understood what this link means, experts say it is further prompting for pregnant women to seek prenatal care. Currently one in every 150 children in the US is autistic and 1 in every 8 children is born premature.

Maybe there is a link.  There are a lot more low birth weight and premature babies these days.  Older moms, more comlications, more IVF multiples.  It is scary.  I have three friends who had babies that weighted less than 5 lbs in the last couple of years.  They were all older moms.

First kid 6 weeks early 7 lbs 1 oz.  Autistic

Second kid not premature at all  7 lbs 13 oz.  Aspergers.

Could it be more likely that infants who are born prematurely or low weight develop autism??  Sure.

But is it true in all cases???  Nope.

This is just like the older mom theory.  I was 21 when my first was born.
