Drunk Mom Lets One-Year-Old Drive

Posted by Amy S.F. Lutz

Say you're out on the road one night:  would you rather encounter a drunk driver or a car with a toddler behind the wheel?

I know, it's a tough call.

One inebriated Ohio Mom decided last week that her one-year-old would be more accurate and coordinated than she could be in her state, so she let him steer while perched on her lap.

I appreciate this woman's recognition of her own level of impairment, but I have to wonder why she didn't hand over the keys to either of her other, older kids, ages eight and five, who were also along for the ride.  I mean, you'd expect an eight-year-old to be a much better driver.

By the way, if you think this is a crazy story, virtually the same thing happened less than a year ago, when Holly Schnobrich, 24, of Indiana, was arrested after letting her five-year-old drive because - as she explained to her extremely concerned neighbors - "He's a good driver."  Schnobrich failed every sobriety test after taking, at the very least, Percoset and sleeping pills.  Her kids were taken by the Department of Child Services.

In the Ohio case, this made DUI arrest #3 for the unnamed woman.  Her kids were released to the custody of their dad - I couldn't find out whether the parents are still married.  I have to say, I don't think I could be married to anyone who repeatedly endangered my kids like that.

This is insane! Everyone knows a 1 year old drives MUCH better than a 5 year old.
