The Unkindest Cut: Paid Time Off Gets the Ax

Posted by Madeline Holler

Just when we started making progress on things like paid maternity leave (we were making progress on that, right?), the economy goes in the shitter. Now, companies are having to cut back on family-friendly benefits like paid time off for having a baby/adopting a baby/raising a baby.

Sucky!

In fact leaves and pay for time off for both parents are at lower levels than they were a decade ago.

From WSJonline:

Only 16% of employers offer full pay for childbirth leave, down from 27% in 1998, based on a nationally representative sample of 1,100 employers by the nonprofit Families and Work Institute. The average maximum length of job-guaranteed leaves for new mothers shrank too, to 15.2 weeks from 16.1 weeks a decade ago; leave for dads fell to 12.6 weeks from 13.1.

It's not that The Man is evil (I guess). Instead, it's the growing cost of disability insurance, which is what covers most maternity leave costs in the U.S. So moms are taking much, much less time off after baby. Parents are also having to take on more debt, or plan very carefully (and hope for no glitches) when deciding whether and when to have a baby.

I seriously don't understand how American's can afford to have babies. It's sad to see so little value being placed on child rearing, especially in a country that has so many pro-life supporters - - who has a choice?

In Quebec not only do we have medicare to pay for our medical expenses, Parents get up to 1 year mat leave and 5 weeks paternity leave paid by the government. Daycare in our province is subsidized at $7/day, our model is certainly not perfect and there are many left scrambling to find open spots but it's sure better than nothing.

Whoa, wait - 15 weeks? Who gets 15 weeks? Man, I thought I was doing OK with 6!

My husband and I recently had a problem with this. He is a physician at a CATHOLIC hospital and took two weeks off after the birth of our first child. When he returned to work they informed him his pay would be docked those eight days he missed because he was out of "vacation" days. WTF? I had a c-section! We brought life into this world! It wasn't a trip to Tahiti!

Turns out he was only over "vacation" days by two, therefore we only had to fork over about $1000 so he could stay home to take care of us. Phew! Relief, right??
