Strawberry Shortcake Goes Glam (and Bloomerless)

Posted by Madeline Holler

Makeovers aren't just for lonely cable subscribers and post-partum mommies. Even the inhuman are subject to a new wardrobe, different hobbies, bigger heads and smaller tummies.

Cartoonists and marketers have joined together to put aging animated characters through extreme makeovers. They're starting with saccharin-sweet 80s icon Strawberry Shortcake.

Here are some of her more obvious nips, tucks and shifted interests (from the Times):

Strawberry Shortcake, part of a line of scented dolls, now prefers fresh fruit to gumdrops, appears to wear just a dab of lipstick (but no rouge), and spends her time chatting on a cellphone instead of brushing her calico cat, Custard.

Others going under the cartoon knife are Angelina Ballerina, Bugs Bunny (what! He's perfect!), Scooby-Doo and the Care Bears. Can't we just shoot the latter and be done with it? Apparently not, the cloying bears will get slimmer waistlines and longer lashes (no word on stripping their vocal chords and rendering them mute).

Okay, have her like fruit instead of gum drops. Makes sense for a girl named after a strawberry. If you want to update her wardrobe, fine. But did they have to take away all of her charm and make her look like she spends all day in front of a mirror brushing her hair and would never get her hands dirty? It's just sick how they market sex to the younger and younger crowd. Can't a girl be a girl?

Hey, as long as they put some pants on Angelina.  She and Alice look strangely pornographic without bottoms on.

Apparently, a girl can be a girl as long as she's so thin her head is bigger than her body! Notice how all the characters are getting "slimmed down"?  I guess we want to combat that whole trend of Americans living longer and healthier lives than ever, with deaths from diabetes and heart disease down.  Because, OMG TEH FATZ will kill us!

Wow!  New Strawberry Shortcake sits placidly batting her eyelashes.  Original Strawberry looks like she's ready to run around and climb trees.  The line about "chatting on her cell phone rather than brushing her cat Custard" actually made me tear up... trading in a Kitty for a Cell Phone?  Horrible!

Well I for one LIKE the new version, the old strawberry was no 'fatter' just covered up in a frumpy dress, As a kid I was into strawberry shortcake, until the tender age of 6 or 7 when i realized there was more interesting toys then a plastic rag doll lookalike.

And anyway, cutened up or not, anything is better then Bratz
