I suppose that all dog maulings are, by definition, gruesome and tragic, but this case seems just a little bit worse: Nicole Hemmick, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, lay down to sleep with her one-month-old son after returning from an early morning of delivering newspapers. She was woken up about one o'clock by her five-year-old, who apparently needed assistance working the remote control. Nicole saw that her son had been moved from where she had put him down, realized he was no longer wearing his diaper, and noticed that he was bleeding. She then rushed him to the emergency room, where doctors discovered, "the child's testicles had been pulled out of the scrotum."
And the culprit? Not a pitbull, or a rottweiler, or any of the usual suspects. The family owned a six-month-old Poodle/Cairn Terrier mix. A puppy. Which was subsequently euthanized at the request of the owner.
Now, there's lots of things about this story that don't make sense to me, like how a mother could be sleeping right next to her baby while he's being mutilated and not wake up, whereas virtually every mom I know starts awake when baby hiccups three rooms over; or how or why the dog got the baby's diaper off before attacking him - but regardless of whatever additional facts might be missing from this account, it seems one thing is clear: don't leave a new baby with any dog. Period. If Baby Toto can't be trusted, I can't believe any dog can.
