Dog Rips Off Baby's Genitals

Posted by Amy S.F. Lutz

I suppose that all dog maulings are, by definition, gruesome and tragic, but this case seems just a little bit worse:  Nicole Hemmick, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, lay down to sleep with her one-month-old son after returning from an early morning of delivering newspapers.  She was woken up about one o'clock by her five-year-old, who apparently needed assistance working the remote control.  Nicole saw that her son had been moved from where she had put him down, realized he was no longer wearing his diaper, and noticed that he was bleeding.  She then rushed him to the emergency room, where doctors discovered, "the child's testicles had been pulled out of the scrotum."

And the culprit?  Not a pitbull, or a rottweiler, or any of the usual suspects.  The family owned a six-month-old Poodle/Cairn Terrier mix.  A puppy.  Which was subsequently euthanized at the request of the owner.

Now, there's lots of things about this story that don't make sense to me, like how a mother could be sleeping right next to her baby while he's being mutilated and not wake up, whereas virtually every mom I know starts awake when baby hiccups three rooms over; or how or why the dog got the baby's diaper off before attacking him - but regardless of whatever additional facts might be missing from this account, it seems one thing is clear:  don't leave a new baby with any dog.  Period.   If Baby Toto can't be trusted, I can't believe any dog can.

I would like to believe everyone knows to never ever trust a dog and child alone together.  Obviously not.

We are owned by 4 great dogs, but I would never ever ever allow my older kids around said dogs without me being around.  It only takes a minute.

And how could you NOT wake up when your baby is having his testicles ripped out of his body???  Didn't he cry???

5 bucks says she was on drugs or drunk at the time.  Her story does not add up.  The dog had not been fed obviously and since it was a puppy, smelled milk on the baby that seemed delicious to him.  I think he was trying to eat the baby since he had not been fed in so long.  I have heard of this before. There was a case in NY of a mom leaving her newborn in a drawer on the floor with her starving puppy while she went to the store. The dog thought she left the kid for him to eat so he ate most of it by the time she returned.  They put her stupid ass in jail.

There is something seriously wrong with this story. If she went to sleep at 6 and didn't wake up until 1... Didn't her 1 month old need to eat at all during those hours? Was her 5 year old just alone watching tv until 1pm? How/why did the dog take of the baby's diaper? How did she not hear her baby cry or realize that he was being mutilated right there in the same bed with her? Obviously this is an example of a mother who should not be co-sleeping (she didn't even realize that her infant was on another part of the bed). I know we don't have all of the facts, but it sounds like she was not taking care of her kids properly AT ALL.
