Need Some Extra Cash?

Posted by Adrienne Martini

Hey, Moms! Need some extra cash? For just a small initial outlay, you can just be rolling in dough by the end of the month, if you work hard enough. It's E-A-S-Y!

Just sell Herbalife! Or any number of similar products like Mary Kay or Amway! It's called a Multi-Level Marketing scheme and you -- Yes, YOU -- with all of your social connections are just what's needed.

Or, um, not. Brain, Child magazine's Stacey Schultz takes a good hard look at MLMs and you'll be surprised by what she's discovered -- and interested to learn that most of these "opportunities" not only suck up your money and time, they can destroy most of your relationships.

Sign me up! Or, um, not.

There is some truth to that article, particularly the companies they name.  Arbonne is vicious in the recruiting.

I am a consultant with a company (not mantioning the name only because I don't want it tarred with the same feather as those mentioned, but I do hold a lost of respect for my company {it's cleaning related}) and have been one for nearly a year.  I've never been pressured to recruit (maybe that's because we're a Canadian company, and you know how nice we all are;) ), but if I wanted to get hard core the help is there for me.  I've never been pressured to fake sales, and the best part... I don't have to stock inventory!  When someone orders something it comes from the warehouse.  I could stock it but when they arrive within 3 days it's not really worth it.  Our products aren't seasonal which means I'm not having to purchase items that will be useless to me in 6 months time.

Our manager does up all her own materials, she even made us a dvd, and gives us everything for free.  Sure she wants to keep us motivated, but it costs her a lot of time and money to do those things.

I've not lost a friend over it, honestly, that's not just my effed up perception.  I don't bring up the company and I don't try to force things on people.  That's why I'm not a big wig, but I don't want to be!

The moral of this novel is do your research.  I've never had a "party" of any kind in my home yet I signed up as a consultant, I was stunned!

I got roped into MaryKay for a while, and still feel guilty about recruiting my best friend. The two of us couldn't handle the pressure, and after we broke even we just kind of slipped out of it. The woman who recruited me was a family friend and didn't react well to it. A lot of those women are very slick and manipulative, in my opinion. I still get emails from her, when business is slow, reminding us that her MaryKay "business" helps put her kids through college and she needs our help to stay afloat. Uh. No. It's not my responsibility to support your family. Get a real job.
