Afghanistan War Veteran Assaults Infant Sons

A 25-year-old Canadian soldier has received a light sentence for repeatedly assaulting his six-month-old triplets. The 25-year-old father, who remains anonymous to protect the identity of his children, returned from a three-and-a-half-month tour in Kandahar, Afghanistan suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Not surprisingly, caring for his triplet infants and two-year-old son proved more than he could handle.

Desperate to make his babies stop crying, the soldier repeatedly squeezed and occasionally bit them. He was charged with assault after the babies were taken to the hospital with a total of 19 broken bones. All three infants are now recovered.

Instead of serving jail time, the soldier has been granted conditional freedom. The presiding judge, ostensibly heavily influenced by a psychologist’s report detailing the soldier's unbalanced mental state, sentenced the father to 18 months of therapy and counseling. He also must abide by a curfew and is not allowed unsupervised contact with any children under the age of 18, including his own. Prosecutors may appeal the sentence.

Do you think that the sentence is too lenient for such a deplorable crime? Or do you think that this whole sad story would be even sadder if the father was now behind bars, unable to even attempt to heal himself and make amends with his family?

Now that is scary. I don't know how therapies for this condition should take but I guess they should give him a longer time for that.

Poor babies, I hope they're all okay now.

Three and a half month TOD? Sorry, but I'll bet this guy had issues before he was ever deployed. ITA with Yvie--poor babies.

Thousands of men have gone off to war, seen horrible things, and still managed to resist the urge to bite and beat their babies. (BITING? I mean, what the hell?) This dude is plum crazy, and dangerous too.

The truth is, we have no idea if he "issues" before he was deployed. And a lot of totally normal people come home from war irrevocably traumatized, so don't toss him off as crazy so lightly, Sue and Combermere. It's a tragic story, and I don't know the answers, but I do know that the resonses here show us another excellent of example of how people try to ignore and downplay the horror of war in the modern age.
