FLDS Fashions Available Online

Posted by Amy Kuras

When watching the FLDS raid and subsequent court battles, I'm sure you had many thoughts going through your head, none of which I will attempt to guess at.

But I can guarantee (if you are a regular around here, anyway) that one thing you probably weren't thinking was "Where can I get my mitts on those clothes!!"

But perhaps your fantasy is to look like you just stepped out of Little House on the Prairie, or you're  so concerned with the increasing whoreishness of girls' clothes that you want to just go the other way.

Then get happy, because the women (somehow I know it's the women) of the FLDS have launched their own clothing line. Which is available online, and I don’t really get how that would work since these are people who reject technology. But whatevs.

Also, how are they sewing these things, especially if this takes off? Are they sewing these by hand? How does is not take several decades?

So many questions. And yet, I must admit, I find the little girl's dresses kind of adorable and sort of want one for my daughter, and one of the cute sleepers for my son. What can I say, I loved Little House, books and show.

I know you're largely kidding about these, but... said:

I'm no FLDS expert, but I don't believe they reject technology in a wholesale way -- perhaps you are confusing them with the Amish?  From the little I've read about this group, they use plenty of technology, including computers, cars, phones, etc.  I took a look at the website you linked to, and on the "about us" page the photo background is of a person using a sewing machine.  I believe the clothes are almost assuredly machine sewn.

Some of the pieces do look quite quaint and Little House-ish, but people who try to be conscious of where they spend their money (and the causes/companies/people they support with their expenditures) may want to investigate the FLDS further before making a purchase.  Again, I'm no expert and am not on a soapbox or a crusade, but there is emerging information about these folks, their leader Warren Jeffs is in prison for convictions relating to sexual abuse of minors and there is evidence that polygamy as they practice it is very abusive to women and to the boys who are cast out to maintain a high ratio of women and girls to men for plural marriages.  I suspect that a good deal of their practices fall far from the standards of most Babble readers and would suggest that (if anyone really does like these old-fashioned clothes) before sending money that supports the sect, readers may want to investigate thoroughly to determine whether they are comfortable supporting them.  Maybe if you want a cute sleeper or dress but are troubled by this group, one could look for an old-fashioned dress pattern at the local sewing store and either make it oneself (or, if you're as incompetent as I am, seek out someone with more skill to make it).
