Vegan Parents Malnourish Baby

Posted by Amy Kuras

It's my week to be on the bummer beat. To wit: A couple in Atlanta was sentenced to life in prison in the death of their 6-week old son. They were convicted last year of malice murder, felony murder, involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children for feeding the baby only soy milk and apple juice.

Crown Shakur, the son of Jade Sanders and Lamont Thomas, was only three and a half pounds when he died. The baby was born at home, so no records existed of his birth weight, but he was a full term baby and 3.5 pounds is less than half normal size.  Also, there was only one bottle anywhere in the house.

He was never seen by a doctor in his entire six weeks of life, and the parents claimed they didn’t realize he was in real trouble until minutes before he died.

They couple claim they were vegans and thought the soy milk and apple juice diet was reasonable. A similar case in New York a few years ago led to a lighter sentence.  Prosecutors, however, charged the couple deliberately starved their son.

Now I am not a vegan, but a very quick Google search turned up no evidence whatsoever that vegans would recommend such a whackjob way of feeding a baby – in fact, two different nutritionists were very clear that there is no acceptable homemade alternative to baby formula.

And it seems like vegans would be natural breastfeeders. I mean I know they are against animal products, but people products? Which the person can give willingly?  Why not breastfeed if at all possible?

What do you think? Malicious? Or just plain dumb?

These people are morons, being vegan has nothing to do with it. It's stories like this that give vegans a bad rap. I'm vegan and have a very healthy, very big and very happy baby.

I'm going with plain stupid. I can only hope that they weren't so malicious that they watched their child die.  How old are these two.  Why did they not take their child to a doctor?  EVER?  Really, they have to be that dumb.

Yeah, I hate how stories like these always have headlines that mention the fact the parents are vegans. Could you imagine if someone posted the story as "White Parents Malnourish Baby" ?

I guess it just perpetuates a stereotype... kind of like assuming vegans would be breastfeeding...

My father sent me an article about this couple while I was pregnant.  My husband and I are vegetarians, and I've never quite been able to convince my Texan parents that raising our child vegetarian would be ok.  Articles like these certainly don't help.  If anything, most vegetarians and vegans I've met are much more aware of proper nutrition than the average person because they have to be.  This couple are just total idiots.

By the way, my vegetarian-breastfed baby has doubled in size in his first 3 months and has the chubbiest cheeks you've ever seen.

I'm not vegetarian/vegan, but I agree that their dietary choices probably had nothing to do with the fact that these people are IDIOTS. That poor baby must've shown signs of being sick before he died- like, say, not growing or losing weight... crying a lot (if he had the energy)... I'm just guessing.

The problem's not with vegans- it's with uninformed morons who can't be bothered to find out how to look after a precious baby.

Yeah, we're raising our kids as vegetarians because (a) we think it is healthier, and (b) we do all the cooking (when they are old enough, they can decide on their own).

I've seen non-vegetarian parents filling their kids' bottles with soda, so I guess idiot and/or uniformed parents come in all forms.

I live in the south and I am vegan.  These idiots were on the news saying they had the baby in their filthy bathtub in their filthy house because they were afraid of the "germs in hospitals".  She did breastfeed but it was not enough so they decided on their own to give him apple juice which made him have severe diarrhea, he died of dehydration as a result, not starvation.  If he had been given vegan soy formula on a regular basis he would be alive today.  If you saw this couple you would know immediatly they were mentally ill and/or drug addicts.  Wild eyed, super skinny, reclusive and only fed their baby when they remembered to.  Total nuts on crack.

These parents are getting what they deserve. Like all murderers, they need to spend their lives in jail. This kind of negligence has nothing to do with being vegan. They could have received ProSobee from WIC for free. Being vegan also doesn't prevent parents from taking their babies to the doctor regularly. Being vegan doesn't render someone incapable of noticing that their child is dehydrated or starved (3.5 pounds, seriously?). What an awful way for that poor baby to die.
