Books for Boys

Posted by Adrienne Martini

How do you get boys to read? Personally, I'm a big fan of casually leaving books around the house while announcing, "Oh, no. The Boy shouldn't read that! It will warp his brain!" Of course, I make sure The Boy in question is in earshot first.

But if you prefer a more direct approach, there are other options.

Like Guys Lit Wire, a newish site devoted to ferreting out books boys will enjoy. The list of contributors is a long one that includes reference librarians, YA writers and actual young male readers. The titles suggested range from the supernatural, like the one pictured at right, to the non-fictional, like a bio of Muhammad Ali. The site is updated a couple of times a week, if not more.

Frankly, I wouldn't hesitate to give these books to girls, too. But it's nice to have a boy-positive site to turn to when my current plan fails.
