Is Your Kid Part of the New Baby Boom?

Posted by Jen Chaney

If you gave birth in 2007, your child could be a baby boomer. Or, more accurately, a baby boomleter.

According to data released earlier this week, 4.315 million children were born in the U.S. last year, the highest total since 1957. Considering that other more minor increases in births have been recorded in recent years, some say this means a boom of sorts is in the making.

A demographer tells USA Today the trend might be more accurately described as a boomlet, because it's unlikely that this wave will match the massive numbers of new infants that arrived during the baby boom years (1946 to 1964).

Do you get the sense that more people you know are giving birth? I mean, besides Angelina Jolie? And are you worried that if your kid is a Baby Boomer 2.0, he/she will feel a profound sense of entitlement and constantly reminisce about how awesome Woodstock was?

I think it's fair to say that the traditionalist family has been on the uptick since about 2002. Probably due to the connotations of post 9-11 nationalism and the image of 1950s homemakery that seem to go with it. SAHMs are up. DINKs are down. Laura Bush is thrilled.

I've got a "boomlet" and I just hope it doesn't mean her classes will be huge!

We have a huge number of births happening in the UK because of the influx of east europeans, it's a good thing, we need more young people :)
