When playgrounds attack

Posted by Brett Singer

Hunka hunka burning jungle gymI heard this story on 1010 WINS this morning, but I can't find it on their site, so you're going to have to take my word for it. (Or call me Liar Liar, Pants on Fire – up to you.)

Apparently a group of parents in New York are up in arms about how insanely hot playground equipment is in public parks this summer. With the thermometer hitting 90+ degrees and humidity at approximately 1000%, the metal climbing apparatuses are quite warm to the touch. In fact, our old pal the jungle gym can reach – ready for this? – 165 degrees.

That's the proper temperature for cooked chicken, so at least your kids will avoid bird flu as they spontaneously combust.

I always thought the metal stuff at the playground seemed hot on summer days, but 165 degrees? That's crazy. If this is true, let's be careful out there, folks.

Yes!! I live in Australia and my best friend is from Texas and she was so surprised at how good our playgrounds are.  We have trees shading most and many if not all have sails that cover the playgrounds to provide protection from the sun (sunburn happens here alot).  She said no one plays at the playgrounds where she lived as they are too hot to play on...... crazy if you ask me.

And parents in Phoenix tell them all to get over themselves. My daughter used to beg me to take her to the park - the treeless, unshaded, no grass because it can't grow there park - in the middle of July, when temps top out at 120 or more.

All relative, I guess.

get over themselves? because they're concerned about their childrens health and safety? um no. parents make the decisions regardless if kids beg or not. safety first sounds like good parenting to me.

I've seen playgrounds with heat warnings in FL and TX.  Along the lines of 'Playground Equipment May Be Too Hot Between 10am and 8pm.' It's not surprising that people would be ignorant of the danger--it didn't happen when we were kids.  Sails are great, keeping trees is great.  And to the Phoenix mom, yap, your kids are used to it.  Wait till they have to shovel snow if they move.  Being used to your own climate isn't evil.
