When I read about 59-year-old Linda Smith, of Texas, who gave birth to son Django last week, I assumed this was another medical miracle brought about through the use of IVF, hormone injections, etc.
But I was wrong. Smith conceived completely naturally, although she interpreted the fatigue of early pregnancy as a symptom of menopause.
It's hard not to believe in fate when it comes to the Smiths - Linda and her husband, Steve, lost their 20-year-old son - also named Steve - in a December 2005 motorcycle accident. Although they each have other children from previous marriages, Steve was their only child together. Now, they have Django, whose name means "I awake" in Romanian, and who is helping his parents heal. As Steve Smith told reporters, "We had all this love to give to somebody . . . We'll give it to him."
