Green products I use and like

Method Grapefruit Cleaning WipesBeing 'green' is easier than ever. Part of greening is about what's good for the planet, part is about what's good for you, and some of it is just about making yourself feel better. The best is when the product in question actually works, so you don't feel like you're making a sacrifice to satisfy an agenda, however noble. Here are three things we use in my house.

1.    Seventh generation baby wipes: I don't really understand why people like heavily perfumed baby wipes. When my first son was born, it wasn't as easy as it is now to find unscented chemical-free wipes. For a while, we got some dry wipes from a nurse that we knew, and then wet them. That was a huge pain in the butt (figuratively, not literally) so I'm glad that there are now a number of options, including the Seventh Generation brand, which we use.

2.    Method cleaning wipes: I like the grapefruit ones, which have a slight scent and actually seem to cut through child-created counter grime pretty well. It's not quite as good as Fantastik, but it doesn't stink of chemicals either.

3.    Organic snacks: Look. It's crap. But, as I said before, it's organic crap. The kids are going to eat a certain amount of crap, whether I give it to them or not. One those occasions that I give them crap, I generally choose organic crap. I admit that it mostly makes me feel better, but in theory it is actually better for them… right?

What 'green' and/or au natural products do you use that get the job done?

Organic crap is a huge waste of money.  Sure, organic soda is free of HFCS, but it's still loaded with sugar and not much else, AND it costs 5 bucks per six pack.  You're better off just skipping the crap altogether.

I make a lot of my own cleaning products.  A huge box of baking soda and a jug of vinegar are a lot cheaper than certain fancy "green" cleaning products.  that said, I recently tried the Arm and Hammer Essentials line of cleaning products.  They clean just as well and the refills are cheap.

Way to go on making your own cleaning products. We do that, too. Less packaging, too! Baking soda, vinegar, castille soap, olive oil...that's really all I need. My house is clean and doesn't smell like cleaning products. Just fresh with a little hint of lavender.

You're probably right on the crap. I actually bought some jelly beans (for me, not for the kids) that contained "organic corn syrup." Um, excuse me?

There's still a certain amount of crap kids are going to eat though, so I mostly buy organic crap, too.  Not sodas--until about 3 months ago my 6 y/o thought soda was seltzer mixed with fruit juice, but crap like popcorn and packaged snacks.  My kids love the tofutti cuties--mini ice cream sandwiches made with a soy ice cream.  Like Brett said, I kinda have to think (hope?) it's a little better than regular ice cream.

Hmm, maybe disposable, one-time-use wipes for the countertop aren't so green?  Maybe a sponge with soap and water...

Mom2Two and/or Gretch, could you provide links (or just simply explain) how to concoct natural household products? There's so much info online to sift through, I thought I'd ask someone who actually makes it. Thanks!

CoolAuntieTina: Put 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 water in a spray bottle for a good, all purpose cleaning spray. Olive oil (not Extra virgin, the regular works better for some reason.) is a great furniture and wood polish. Borax is a good disinfectant. Baking soda and water is a great scrubber (like comet), and I sometimes add lemon juice to that for some extra cleaning power. I also make my own launry detergent from this recipe: http://modcottage.com/?p=117  I use Dr. Bronner's instead of Fels Naptha soap and I omit the oxi clean. Hope these help!
