Mommy's (Hairless) Little Angels

Posted by Madeline Holler

Okay, now, where were we with the "growing up too soon," "sexualizing young girls," "can't a kid be a kid (and then a tween and then a gawky teen)" discussion? Because here's a fun little trend to add to the mix: waxing girls so young they become permanently hairless, you know, where they won't have hair for a few more years.

An expert in body hair removal claims she can get rid of unwanted hair permanently. The only caveat: you have to start removing it when you're six years old. And guess what? She's got clients ... lots of them!

She's got a pretty good pitch, too, reasoning it's more of a financial decision than a totally sick one.

From the Today Show at MSNBC

One New York City salon, Wanda’s European Skin Care Center, boasts on its Web site that children 8 years and older can get discounted waxing for “virgin” hair. “Virgin hair can be waxed so successfully that growth can be permanently stopped in just 2 to 6 sessions. Save your child a lifetime of waxing ... and put the money in the bank for her college education instead!” the salon proclaims.

The owner could not be reached for comment, but did tell the New York Post that she has seen more than 200 kid clients this year and that kids should begin waxing at 6 years old.

A Beverly Hills, Calif., salon rep. says nearly 20 percent of their bikini wax clients are in their tweens.

“The increase began a couple of years ago,” said Mitchell, who has been doing bikini waxes for more than 30 years. “Some kids come in with their mothers when the mothers are getting waxed, so they want to do it too. One 10-year-old had thick hair coming down her leg, and she had a bikini and leg wax because she couldn’t go to camp like that without getting teased.”

Hmmmm. Tough call? Or capitulation to a world dominated by fair, photoshopped supermodels? When are you taking your girls in to get rid of their unsightly virgin hair?

I don't understand how anyone could do that to their child or why that standard exists. My sexual partners have never had an issue with my pubic hair.

This is just ridiculous. You don't see little boys going in and getting their faces treated when their first signs of beard come in.

The first salon that I worked in had a client who brought her 11-year old daughter in for "hair removal services."  She used to ask her mom to not make her, but she wasn't persuaded.  "Pain is beauty" was her reply.

I would never take a daughter of mine to get this done... yet a deep dark part of me wishes it had been done to me.

Maybe it's just because I don't get to shave everyday with a new baby in he house. ;)
