Birth Organs Gone Wild: Placenta Prints

Posted by Madeline Holler

An acquaintance of mine -- she's given birth four times -- hands over her babies' umbilical cords to her mother. Nana then waits for inspiration, shapes the cords accordingly and allows them to dry. Then she mounts them for wall hanging.  And, you know, hangs them.

Me? I'm attached to my organs up to and through their practical utility, at which point I'm more than happy to let them go. Others -- clearly much deeper thinkers than myself -- find them artful.

Take, for example, the people behind this special find (thanks to Cookie Mag's Crab Mommy): placenta prints and placenta print-making kits! Quick, get Matthew McConaughey on the line!

No need to stop at inky footprints. And, indeed, that's a nice looking placenta!

What sort of afterbirth hangs on your walls?

We photographed our afterbirth artfully and had the images screen printed on to tee shirts for the whole family.

...or maybe not so much.

What other people do with their placentas does not interest me.

Apparently taking photos of the baby and new mom in the delivery room is not enough for some people. We have neighbors who cooked and ate their child's placenta. I am told this is a relatively common practice.

Dang!  Should I have had my uterus stuffed and mounted over my fireplace after my hysterectomy?  Daveesh, every mother cat I have ever had ate their placenta after giving birth.  But dogs wont touch it.  The dogs have more sense than those neighbors of yours.  Cannibalism is just gross.  Like eating your own scabs or snot.

Cassie, that is not true about dogs... I was at the birth of a litter of 8 and the mama dog ate every last sac! THey, indeed, get rid of all the evidence of the birth because it's instinct. In nature, the pups are in danger of preditors! They do the same thing with poo and pee.....

most all mammals eat the placenta after birth, not only for the reasons LogicalMama mentioned above, but also because it helps to replace vitamins and calories lost during labor.  personally, i didn't choose to eat mine, but i don't necessarily think it's cannibalism or gross.
