Misty May-Treanor Scatters Mom's Ashes at Olympics

Posted by SunnyChanel

Misty May-Treanor’s mom sure does get around. She has frolicked freely in the playing fields of not one but two Olympics stadiums. Well, not her living and breathing self but rather her ashy remains.

The star beach volleyball player Misty May-Treanor’s mother passed away in 2002 after a battle with cancer. While going through chemo, she was lucky enough to cheer Misty on as she finished fifth at the 2000 games in Sydney. Sadly, she didn’t live long enough to see her daughter’s stellar gold metal victories in both the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing summer Olympics. But she’s there in spirit and then some!

After her two gold medal winning matches, Misty May-Treanor has grabbed a small vial of her mother’s ashes and sprinkled them across the sand of the beach volleyball court, her way of sharing the victory with her mom. Not a bad way to spend the hereafter, basking in the glory of your daughter’s gold metal victories.

It's actually kind of gross, inconsiderate, and culturally insensitive.

Why is it culturally insensitive? If it was after she won the gold medal, wouldn't the play on the volleyball court be finished?

A variety of cultures find the remains of dead people to be taboo. Even if all olympic matches were finished (were the men done and did they play on the same court?) I find it hard to believe that that the court would be left inviolate, never to touched by humans again.

I think that it is rude to say that it is inconsiderate and gross what Misty May-Treanor did. I find it senimental and sweet. Look at it in her point of view, she lost her mother. It was something her mother and her had in common that was important to them both. It was also only a smal portion of her remains. So I'm sorry, but you should have some respect for her.
