Crafty: Flying Fingers

Posted by Adrienne Martini

I have a confession to make, one that will firmly cement my status as an old lady with seriously geeky habits. Ready?

I am a knitter. I love the yarn and the needles. I make all kinds of knitwear all of the time. I knit socks -- and, yes, I know I could just buy them. I knit hats and mittens and scarves and sweaters. My kids wear handknits, too, but grow out of them amazingly quickly.

Here's my other little secret: my daughter has just entered the prime "learning to knit" age and I haven't taught her yet. Partly, I know that she'll resist anything I want to teach her right now. But the largest reason I haven't started the lessons is that I just don't think she has the co-ordination right now to juggle needles and yarn.

Enter finger knitting, whose only tools are yarn, which I have waaaaay too much of, and fingers, which we have just the right number of. I'll let you know how it goes.

I never thought about finger knitting!  I also suffer from too much yarn, and my 6 year old wants to learn.  I bought a French knitter (is that the right name?), and a daisy loom to start her off with.  We have not broke them out just yet.

She also wants to sew, on the sewing machine.  I started her out the way that my mom did with me.  Small embroidery projects.  I take a picture that she drew and transfer it onto some light fabric, and let her choose the floss colors.  So far so good.

I'm so glad you mentioned finger knitting though!  I'm looking forward to seeing some completed projects.

I agree -- knitting is cool.  And I'm not just saying that because I knit.

I'm a serious knitter--love it--and my daughter started nagging me to teach her when she was a toddler. She astonished me by learning the knit stitch (I haven't taught her to purl yet) when she was 4 1/2. Now that she is starting kindergarten, we hang out and knit and drink tea together! :-)

What do you think I am doing right now?  If you guessed knitting washcloths for a friends wedding gift you are right!

Oh, be a proud knitter, Adrienne!

My 5 yo son has been bugging me for a couple of years to teach him to knit. Perhaps this is the right speed for him.

I can just see him making long lengths of these and then I could then knit THOSE into a rug or something, a la Mason Dixon Knitting.
