Was Trig Palin drugged?

Posted by Brett Singer

Trig at the Republican ConventionThis comes from a reader, who asked what I think is an interesting question that I haven't heard anyone else ask: how exactly is the Palin family getting Trig to stay so calm while in the public eye?

I've forgotten (or blocked out) some of what my kids were like at that age. I can say, though, that I can't imagine either of them being that calm in the face of so much clamor and activity.

One explanation is that the kid is, well, drugged. Now, I don't mean Quaaludes, just a little Benadryl or Tylenol. I freely admit that I've done the same thing, although not recently and only in certain situations, like on an airplane. The idea of doping the kids wouldn't have occurred to be except that our pediatrician suggested it. So this isn't a judgment thing, unless you want it to be.

Another possibility is that baby Trig (short for Trigonometry?) is just a mellow baby. They do exist, although in my experience they are almost as rare as unicorns. There are babies that work in television, or even theater: I saw one in a play who, much to my amazement, managed to stay quiet during a very long and loud scene.

So it's possible that the kid is just naturally low-key. But wow, talk about good behavior.

Me, I would've maybe not put the kid on camera quite so much, but that's a separate issue. (Some say that Trig "has definitely become a central prop in [the McCain] campaign," which unfortunately seems to be true.)

For those of you who currently have children that age, or who haven't erased that period of time from their memory banks, how do you think your little one would have withstood the tumult of a political convention?

All my mom friends says he is drugged too.  Benadryl.  Not good for heart babies though.  He is a prop.  A good parent would have that baby home in bed at that time of night, his 6 year old sister too.  But props are needed for mommmys' high paying gig.

When my now 8-month-old was 4 months, he really was that mellow. Of course, sometimes he would get cranky, but it had nothing to do with sound or excitement. Usually we had no idea what it was about. :)

And as far as being in bed at that time... my son never was/is either. But then again, I'm a bad parent.

I had a friend whose daughter was mentally challenged and she said one of the first ways they knew something was wrong was that her daughter slept all the time. They had to wake her up to do anything-- eat, change her diaper, etc. I wonder if it is a characteristic of children with Downs?

It was a little before that age, maybe around 3 months, when my daughter stopped just zonking entirely out in noisy places and started getting perturbed.  The pediatrician said it was a way of blocking out stimuli she couldn't quite deal with yet.  So maybe since the baby is possibly developmentally delayed he's still doing that?

My niece is 9 months old and she has always been a mellow baby. She'd have no problem chilling at a political convention. My brother (her dad) was exactly the same way when he was little--fell asleep on a moving speedboat once.

Good lord!  The convention wasn't over until after 11pm.  My baby goes to bed between 7pm and 8pm.

I don't think you're a bad parent for letting your kid stay up late, but HOW DO YOU HAVE ANY SANITY LEFT?  Don't you need some "me" time.  When do you have sex?  3am?

Technically, the convention was over before 11:00, since they were in St. Paul.

My son usually goes to bed by 10. I have sanity left because I work all day, don't see him until about 7, and then usually stay up until 1 or so. All of us run on late schedules. :)

Also, it's tough to attack community organizers all day. He's probably just exhausted.

Did anyone make a fuss when Barack Obama's two young girls stayed up to watch their mom's speech?  Did you call them props when they oh so cutely waved to daddy via a video monitor?  Watch out for the double standard, it'll get you every time.

My son is one day younger than Trig, and he really is that mellow.  We were actually just discussing yesterday how much our little guy sleeps--more than I remember his brothers sleeping.  That being said, I usually have him in bed around 7.

As far as the Obama children being props:  yeah, they are.

I think the better question is:  why are the pregnant daughter and her baby-daddy at the convention instead of starting school?  C'mon, doesn't Bristol have a ton of work to make up from last year when she had "mono"?  At this rate, she's never going to graduate high school...

My daughter is a year now and goes to bed between 9pm-9:30pm. We keep trying to get her down earlier, but she is resistant. She did go to sleep between 7-8 when she was 4-6 months, though. I know one thing for sure: if I had had her in front of a crowd like that she would have gone BUCK WILD...screaming, crying, the whole nine yards. Large groups of people have always freaked her out. It was hard enough keeping her calm at her first birthday party when we all crowded around her to sing. She basically lost her sh*t.

If the shoe were on the other foot, and Obama had some baby-daddy at the conventions, the Republicans would have had a field day. But it's ok because Palin is their golden gal. I didn't have that much of a problem with the kids, but the baby-daddy was a bit much.
