Vice Stay-at-Home "Dude" ... or Something

As much as I disagree with his wife's views on, well, everything, I am finding myself more and more intrigued at the prospect of Todd Palin taking up residence at the Naval Observatory -- home to the vice president. According to a story in the LA Times, it's possible he'd be the most high-profile stay-at-home dad since ever.

In Alaska, he's known as the "first dude" -- a hockey dad who takes care of the kids while his wife, Gov. Sarah Palin, flip-flops on a variety of issues. He also races snowmobiles and once finished a race by riding 400 miles with a broken arm. I have a feeling raising five children under a media spotlight might not be that big a deal for him.

Actually he does not stay at home with the kids.  He works and races.  The kids are in day care.  I predict he will not move to the lower 48 but mainatain their home in AK where his business is.  This guy does not bake cookies and help with homework.

Please, please do not turn Sarah into a pop star and media darling.  A blog that churns out so many thoughtful articles on progressive, responsible parenting is no place for a covert puff piece on the Palin family.  NO ONE is taking care of these kids.  It is politics first, snowmobiles second.  The welfare of the kids is way at the bottom of the list.  I have a baby that is a few days older than Trig.  I can barely comb my hair and take care of her and my older son.  And it's not because I'm not cool enough to finish a snowmobile race with a broken arm, it's because parenting is HARD.  And good parenting is even HARDER.  The fact that the Palins are so focused on career and hobbies doesn't mean they are going to be  better parents under the spotlight.  It means that they are focused on career and hobbies.  Period.

He's not a stay at home dad and has stated he has no interest in being one.

I feel sorry for Trig. He really needs someone (mom or dad) to be fully involved and nurturing him, not just passing him around like a prop.

It would of course be cool if Todd Palin were a truly involved and caring SAHD. But hopefully he won't be the first dude of the USA. His wife's views and lack of knowledge are too scary.
