Dad And Autistic Son Tread Water Overnight After Being Swept Out To Sea

Posted by Amy S.F. Lutz

There have been times - when my autistic son punched his hand through a window, or escaped from his dad at Costco and made it across a busy retail complex to Toys R Us before we tracked him down - that I thought that there must be someone watching over those children that need the most help.

Now I see that whoever is watching over my son is watching over other kids as well.

How else can you explain how 12-year-old Chris Marino, who is also autistic, survived more than 12 hours after he and his father, Walter, were swept out to sea off the Florida coast Saturday?  Both Chris and his father treaded water, separately, all night long - the current that pulled them out also pulled them apart, so neither knew if the other was still alive.

Somehow, a boat found Walter at around 7:30 am.  The Coast Guard found Chris at around 9:30, three miles away from where his dad was rescued.

It's just amazing to me that both father and son survived this ordeal.

That is an amazing and heart warming story, but I am not entirely sure if being autistic has anything to do with it. Whoever watches over our children in desperate times, hopefully watches over them developmental disorder or not.  Thank goodness that both the father and his son made it back into eachothers arms.

I wonder if he was wearing a life vest.

Hmm, that first comment was a little insensitive.  If there is "Something/one" watching over, surely s/he does take into account that some moments are more vulnerable than others, and some lives are in more vulnerable places.

I heard on the radio that the way they kept awake the whole time was like this: the dad would shout, "To Infinity!" and the kid would reply, "And Beyond!"
