The day after Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul turned down an endorsement request from John McCain's camp, he urged his supporters to vote for any of the third-party candidates who are also still in the race.
Two of the four candidates he named were himself and independent candidate Ralph Nader. Wow! Are we going to see a Republican election spoiler or will the two cancel each other out?
Paul disparaged the two-party system in the U.S. today speaking before the Washington Press Club. He said neither party was different from the other and no way would they bring about change.
Still, it looks like McCain really wants Paul's support(ers). The request for a McCain endorsement came from Phil Gramm, who left the campaign after belittling American concerns about an economic recession. Interestingly, Paul reports Gramm's argument for helping to get McCain elected was damning with the faintest of praise:
According to Paul, Gramm asked him back to McCain, arguing that the Republican was closer to his positions than Obama.
''The idea was that he would do less harm than the other candidate,'' Paul said.
Well then!
Does Paul have the ability to skim votes away from McCain? Or will Nader match him with votes taken away from Obama? Is this good? Bad? Comment with your insights!
