Twins Will Be Separated by 1 Year In School

Posted by Madeline Holler

All this talk about redshirting your kid, I'm just glad I don't have to make those choices. (Shout out to kids born in the spring!)

The interesting thing is that in many states in the U.S. parents actually have a choice to push ahead or wait. In the U.K., it appears that the rules are hard and fast. Born Sept. 1 or later, you wait until next year to start. Born Aug. 31 or earlier, pack your books, you're headed to school. Which has presented an interesting dilemma for these twins, Lexus and Amber Conway, who were born right around midnight -- Lexus officially showed up on Aug. 31st, Amber, a few minutes after midnight on Sept. 1st.

Their parents are outraged that the two might actually be required to start school a year apart even though they were born but minutes apart.

I have a hard time believing the powers that be in education won't make an exception. But! Let me stir the pot and say wouldn't it be cool if they didn't? We could see, once and for all (fine, based on one case, but whatever ...) whether waiting a year has the advantages some say it does.

Of course, if an exception is not made, the girls' parents say they'll move to Spain where the rules aren't so stringent. They are very opposed to separating the girls. Anybody out there ever separate their twins by a year in school?

Okay, off-topic, but... they named their baby Lexus? That's it; I'm totally naming my kid Land Rover.

I would be so PISSED if that happened. I know my twins will probably be in separate classrooms, but I would never send one to school a year earlier than the other. I would move to Spain. I sort of want to move to Spain anyway.

Funny...my brother and sister were also born around midnight, so have different birthdays, and actually even different astrological signs.  When my mom was registering them for kindergarten, she was offered the option of holding them back a year (this was before the term "redshirting") as their birthdays were close to the cut-off.

She started them on time, but in 1st grade my sister was left back.  She and her twin were essentially in different grades for their school careers.  Interestingly (and unrelated?), my sister dropped out of high school and enrolled in community college, were she got her GED, and eventually her associates.  She's now in nursing school.

km -- wow! I figured if anybody wrote in about separated twins, it would be that a boy was held back while his twin sister started "early." Interesting!

manjari -- right? I'm like if you CAN move to Spain, why not!

Mary -- thanks for saying what no one else dared to say.

i know boy twins where one was held back somewhere along the line in school because he was having learning issues, but he has a huge grudge against his brother and they don't get along. the one in the grade ahead feels terrible and said he'd rather have been held back than have his brother hate him! :(

not that it's the typical situation, but how sad, right?
