Naked Harry Potter pics hit the web

Posted by Brett Singer

Let's call it – The Full Muggle.

Some intrepid theatergoer snapped blurry cameraphone shots of Daniel Radcliffe nekkid onstage in 'Equus', currently on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre. Here are a couple of the pics:

Harry Potter - OK, Daniel Radcliffe, the actor who plays him in the movies - nude! NUDE! Um, who cares?

Some fans that are flipping out over this. Some comments from the Daily News article:

The snapshot shows Radcliffe, 19, standing totally naked in front of co-star Anna Camp, who is also bare to the bone.
The scandal surrounding the teenage star's nudity has helped ticket sales with advance box office receipts topping $3 million.
Fans buying tickets vented their outrage at the sneaky snapper.
"They're turning art into pornography," said stage technician Rachel Juozapaitis, 27.

"Someone has violated his privacy," said Susan Zimmerman, 32, an NYU graduate student.

Um, not exactly. Someone – admittedly, someone kinda pervy – took pictures of something happened on a Broadway stage and posted them online. Porn? Violation of privacy? I don't think so.

"It's just wrong, he still has to do some more Harry Potter films for the kids."

"He didn't sign up for this, now it's for all time, forever on the Internet. What about all the Harry Potter children?"

Ah, yes. The children. Methinks very young children are unlikely to surf to these shots on their own, and I don't think any parent will show them to their kids. Even if they did (which would be nuts), there's not much to see. (That's a comment on the photo quality, not Mr. Radcliffe's, um, bangers and mash, as they say in the U.K.)

As for "he didn't sign on for this," the play calls for his character to be fully nude, and if he thought that someone wouldn't take pictures of it, Daniel needs to get out more. So, you know, sure, it's kinda lame, but the level of fan outrage is a bit kooky.

So why did I post it here? Honestly? I just wanted to use the phrase "The Full Muggle." Sorry.

Wow, he has more muscular arms than I would have thought from those Harry Potter movies.

And I'm kind of with the "what's the big deal" people - he was getting naked on stage in front of good amounts of people per week, so it isn't like someone caught a shower pic of the guy.  Equus is a respected bit of theatre, so it's not like he was doing some weird, fetid ZOMGindy piece.  We all have bodies, and he was just acting in his. Who cares?  If Harry Potter grows up to have kids in the end, will the same parents boycott the books because Harry Potter had sex at some point? Surely not. . .

I've said this before about Radcliffe being involved in the wonderful play, Equus:

1) People are so crazy about the nekid body, jeez! We've all got mostly the same bits split about 50 50, so chill.

2) Equus, if done well (I haven't read reviews of this production) is a wonderful and very thought provoking piece of theatre. I highly recommend it. It is definitely NOT for children, and that should be okay. The scenes sans-clothing are the least of the adult issues discussed in the piece. Radcliffe should not be chained to a "child friendly only" artistic career just because he was in some movies based on a much loved book.

About not signing on for it, many shows prohibit photographing or filming, so if whis is one, it's reasonable to say he has an expectation that performance photos won't hit the web (and honestly, although I'm guilty of photographing in prohibited shows, this was kind of tacky)

oh, I agree it was tacky. But saying that his privacy was violated is kind of loopy. I also think that he shouldn't be surprised - tackiness, unfortunately, is to be expected.
