Morning News: Beginning of a New Economy? End of McCain's Hopes? Palin Comes in 2nd?

Posted by Madeline Holler

Today in Morning News, we're all about beginnings and endings. Did Friday's debate mark the beginning of the end for John McCain? Does today's bailout plan mark the end of the beginning of an economic meltdown? One magazine includes Sarah Palin in a list of world leaders -- is that a sign of the world ending?

Which Hollywood starlet tied the knot this weekend (to begin a new life)? And which was arrested for DUI (to end an old career)? Plus, a high-calorie lawsuit.

Let's start with Friday's debate. Commentators seemed to agree there were no standout moments, no memorable zingers. While most said Obama won, they didn't exactly say McCain lost. But in terms of favorability, Obama came out ahead. The night's big loser was host Jim Lehrer, who apparently thought the two had suited up for a mud wrestling event, so insistent was he on getting them to "look at each other" and take the first swing (not an actual quote).

McCain's daughter Meghan saw something many of us didn't. In her blog, she captioned a photo that her day was all smiles. Interesting, they looked like sneers on our TV as McCain made every effort NOT to look at Obama.

Today will begin with a bi-partisan celebration of the House's hard work on a bailout plan. Or it will end with more pushback and a lack of support from key voters. Supposedly the 110-page document contains safeguards for taxpayers, who will be eating up $700 billion in bad mortgages (yummy!). Still no help for troubled homeowners. Maybe the Bush Administration thinks we should just buy up that bad debt too?

Incidentally, the two you are watching react to this plan  -- one of whom will inherit this mess --  may skip voting on this bailout plan. Can you do that and get elected president?

No one at Maxim magazine skipped the chance to vote on the world's hottest politicians! In our Daily Palin, we're proud (yet also disappointed) to announce Sarah Palin came in second place. Think she'll come in second again any time soon?

Esquire magazine favorite (and Obama supporter) Scarlett Johansson married boyfriend Ryan Reynolds this weekend. Did you know she's only 23 years old? The opposite-of-Palin mother in us thinks she should have waited a few more years before settling down.

Heather Locklear was arrested near Santa Barbara, Calif., over the weekend on suspicion of driving under the influence of a controlled substance. The every-mother in us feels sad/outraged that she would do that. (She was, however, alone in the car.)

Finally, it's a Morning News public service announcement: Can't figure out why you're packing it on despite ordering the Weight Watchers-endorsed meals at your favorite lunch spot, Applebee's? Yeah, well, the calorie and fat count is off, way off. "Not even close," according to the attorney who filed a lawsuit against the chain. Have they no respect for the POINT?!
