I'm a band director. This is a class C flute solo. As in 1st or 2nd year, grade 6, 12 years old.

Yep.  (Rocks back and forth on heels, hands in pockets, whistling and looking at the ceiling.)

As a former flute player, that was way too easy and way out of tune.

Gawd, I would hate for old videos of me from the 80's to get leaked all over YouTube...but then again, I'm not running for VP.

This is painful to watch (and listen to)! She looks cross-eyed as she plays, the hair is a disaster and so is her outfit. La Reveuse's comment is too funny!

AND.......what did YOU do in the last 25 years, Leila????  Hair and out a disaster??? IT WAS 1983, for the love of Pete!  Please--give me a break.  Send in your videos from a 1983 beauty pageant, and we can compare them.

In 1983 I was teaching music.  And yep, that is some crappy flute playing.  I have heard middle schoolers play better than that.  NO breath control, out of tune, and anyone who has been playing for ten years should play MUCH better than that. The solo is a trite piece of garbage.  That my dear is not talent.  Although if it had been up to her I am sure she'd have gutted a moose onstage.  And the hair was really scary...hell, everything about this abomination of a woman is scary.

And by the way, I am a flute player.  She may have been a bit sharp, but the band--especially the coronet player was VERY flat.  What does this matter in the grand scheme of the adult world.   She is awesome in many other ways beside this. WOULDN'T YOU AGREE?

I am not sure this was even a backing tape. Horn player sounds way out of tune to me. Could have been a live band playing back  up. It was 1983 and a state pageant. Lay off the woman. She's hot and most of you are not. She is not running on her flute playing ability.

You missed the whole point of my message, J.  My point is, that whatever happened to you, whether teaching, growing up, being 18 or 28.... is part of what made you what you are today.  I am sorry that you believe that a woman who has accomplished all that Sarah Palin has, is an abomination.   She has a myriad of accomplishments to be PROUD of, that ANY woman would be proud of.  Gutting a moose?  Maybe cleaning a fish, but at any rate... our ancestors learned to survive knowing these things.  What a multifaceted LADY she is!

Terry...Such a typical comment when one woman criticizes another.  She's hot..we're not.  I have been happily married for 14 years to a man who is nuts about me.  Jealous?  Let me see, I have a son who is gifted.  She has a son who sold drugs, a daughter who got knocked up in high school, two girls we don't know anything about except their idiotic names, and a son with down syndrome.

She attended how many colleges before getting her degree?  I have a BA in History, worked three jobs at a time in college and still managed to get on the dean's list several times.  I received my MA in Music History while my son was a toddler, graduating with a 4.0 GPA.  I would debate Sarah Palin anytime, any place.  But with an IQ of 156, I am certain I would quickly put her to shame.

I also play all the woodwinds with more proficiency than she does on one instrument.

I suppose in your eyes I am an arrogant, liberal, elitist.  Better that than an ignorant, narrow-minded, conservative whose idea of a qualified candidate is one who thinks dinosaurs co-existed with humans, can't name another Supreme Court case, and thinks being able to see Russia from Alaska makes her an expert on foreign policy.

Bubba DID play the sax better than she played the flute, but that isn't saying much.

Anyone who knows anything about music would be able to tell that was a live band backing her up.  And sadly, their playing wasn't much better than hers.

J--OMG!!!!

    I've played flute for 13 years. That is just atrocious from anyone above a middle school level. She's out of tune, her breathing is way off, horn angle is too high and that piece is schmaltzy beyond words. And as for the back up...I'm fairly sure that's a recorded track.

    I don't care what you think about her politics, she's a bad instrumentalist. So let's not get quite so personal about it. :) Pretend you're judging the contest...then we can all agree, she's just plain awful. And that's definitely something that doesn't depend on how you look.

    At least Clinton was in tune and confident...geez.

My trumpeting farts sound better than Sarah Palin playing the flute. I should know because I've been farting for 30 years. Sarah Palin stinks worse too!

really, really bad - she probably was last chair in her jr. high band, and resurrection of this 'talent' proves that she had nothing else to offer, poor gal.

The bar is set underground for the 'talent' part of beauty contests, though - do we really think that there was a flautist on the panel, lol?

(I love the way she actually pulls the flute away and smiles between one of the phrases - highlarious!)

I almost lost my sobriety from ana anxiety attack after being exposed to one of the foulest things I have ever heard. Sara Palin, you are truly a dangerous person, please join our troops now.

Ms. Palin, you are a slap in the face to not only women, but to humanity in gerneral.  You have NO BUSINESS claiming to have a "talent" for your "beauty contest", and even you must truly know that you have no business in any form of leadership.   Perhaps you should join the Army, afterall, you are so pro war, and such a sharp shooter (supposedly)

None of us need justify to anyone why we open the case and play our musical instrument once in a while.  It is my wish that everyone play in the band at their school and continue to enjoy music the rest of their life.  In addition, playing in the band at school teaches the values of being personally responsible to a large group.  These values need to be revisited by some.  And shame on any band director that ridicules a former band student who only has time to practice once in a blue moon.

I encourage all of you to dust off your instrument, open the windows, practice with reckless abandon, join the community band, and make no apologies.  

By the way.  After reading this blog, I'm sure I've taught your kids.
