The Craziest Reason I've Ever Heard For Losing 113 Pounds

Posted by Amy S.F. Lutz

So many of us would like to lose a few pounds (or more), and for different reasons:  to be healthier, to look better in jeans, to look sexy in a bikini, to have more energy - and all those reasons make sense to me.

Ashley Barrett-Carter, of Texas, lost 113 pounds over the course of a year, for a reason I cannot at all relate to:  so she could join the army.

Barrett-Carter tried to enlist last year, but when she weighed in at 263 pounds, she was told she was too heavy.  The sergeant at the recruiting station told her to come back when she weighed 160 pounds.  So she started eating less and exercising more, and now she's off to basic training.

I bet she'll look really sexy in those fatigues.

I really don't get the angle of the article. So people who lose weight for reasons other than sexiness/health are weird?

If this is the craziest reason you ever heard - because someone had a career goal, a desire for success, to achieve a dream - surely it's time to get your face out of the diet magazines.

More power to her!  I can't imagine the amount of dedication it must have taken to motivate her to stick with it. I hope she really enjoys her chosen career path.

I have (thank goodness) never been through the physical duress of military training, but my understanding from those who have is that it. is. tough.   There is a reason you have to start from a minimum level of fitness.

I am not sure why you find this so weird.  I think it's great and I am glad to have someone with that kind of determination in our army.

While I have never been gung-ho on military service, I suppose there was a time I could have been as incredulous as asflutz, but I have a greater respect for the military lately, and so I want to remind her that yes, there are still be who consider it an honor and don't just join for the college money or to get out of a bad situation. I am surprised, also, but very proud of Ashley - it wouldn't work on me.

Hi,

I am Ashley's Mother.  Her desire to join Army was due to the fact that she wanted to finish college. She already has an associate degree and when done with basic training will be a corporal.  She will then be stationed at Ft. Sam Houston where whe will get a medical degree.  When she graduates she will be a lieutenant in the army and have her nursing degree.  You see it wasn't the army that motivated her it was her desire to get her education.  Right now she is enlisted as a reservist but is seriously thinking of joining full time.  I am very proud of her accomplishment no matter what motivated her.
