Morning News: Who's Winning With Only 30 Days Left?

Posted by Madeline Holler

Q: How is the media like an impatient pregnant couple just itching to decorate the nursery?

A: They can't wait until election day to find out if they're having an Obama or a McCain!

It's the part of elections that are most annoying -- the part toward the end where the electoral map gets continually recolored and we hear definitive declarations over who is winning. Can't we get out and rock the vote first?

But we know, we know, you're curious. Here's the latest on who has pretty much cleared a path to victory: things are looking very good for Democrat Barack Obama.

On "Meet the Press" yesterday, NBC's Chuck Todd said the Illinois senator is one state away from clinching the win. Of course, there's the plausible scenario that Obama and  John McCain could tie, in which case the Democrat led House of Representatives would decide (though here's a baffler: the Dems might not have enough votes to give it to Obama ... Pelosi, is it too soon to start working the phones?)

While things are looking good for Obama, his campaign isn't taking any chances. Or maybe they're taking the biggest chance of all. In anticipation of the flavor-of-the-week smears (Palin launched it with her "he's palling around with terrorists comments" over the weekend), Obama's campaign will launch a multi-media campaign reminding voters of McCain's involvement in the Keating 5 scandal. This includes blasting a link to this site, where a 13-minute documentary on the Keating 5 will air at noon EST today.

The GOP is fighting back (or are they fighting for survival?) with a call to audit Obama's campaign funds.

The LA Times dares to go there ... "there" being questioning John McCain's competence and judgment as a pilot back in the day. Yikes! Dan Rather, room for two more journalists wherever you are?

Think it's time for John McCain to stop taking weekends off? I'll bet his campaign thinks so.

They also think it's time to fully unleash Sarah Palin. We do too! We do too! (Diane Sawyer? The View? Oh, no, you wouldn't ... Rachel Maddow?!!!  It doesn't matter. We love Sarah's interviews!) All this talk of Sarah puts us in the mood for some Daily Palin.

First, our favorite version of the Alaska governor: in the body and mind of Tina Fey! Go here to watch her debate Joe Biden. Check out the other videos too. In fact, maybe it's time to start actually watching SNL again.

Onto the real Sarah: seven Alaska state employees who had initially refused to testify in Troopergate have agreed to honor their supoenas. And so has husband Todd!

Stepping away from the campaign bubble ... Good news for the 90-year-old woman who tried to commit suicide over her home's foreclosure. Fannie Mae has forgiven her loan. OK, but, people? They're only doing it this once!

China has arrested six suspects in the tainted milk scandal. And melamine has been found in some Cadbury products in Hong Kong (Easter's just not going to be the same this year).

Not yet under arrest is whoever managed to steal 160 bras from a Victoria's Secret in Fort Myers, Fla. Apparently there's a bra-stealing ring and they've already taken some $19,000 in merchandise from two of the lingerie stores.
