Denis Leary says 'Your kids aren't autistic. They're stupid or lazy.'

Posted by SunnyChanel

Want to hear Denis Leary insult countless parents? Want to hear Denis Leary insult autistic children? Want to hear Denis Leary insult the “stupid and lazy”. Well, if you yes to any or all of those, today is your day!  “Comedian”, actor and author Denis Leary wrote some incendiary stuff in his new book "Why We Suck: A Feel-Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid."

Leary writes: "There is a huge boom in autism right now because inattentive mothers and competitive dads want an explanation for why their dumb-ass kids can't compete academically, so they throw money into the happy laps of shrinks . . . to get back diagnoses that help explain away the deficiencies of their junior morons. I don't give a [bleep] what these crackerjack whack jobs tell you -- yer kid is NOT autistic. He's just stupid. Or lazy. Or both."

Quick to respond, the Autism Society has issued the response “"For Mr. Leary to suggest that families or doctors conspire to falsely diagnose autism is ridiculous. . . . [His] remarks reflect the same misconceptions of autism being caused by bad or unemotional parenting that were held over 50 years ago."

And Leary seems to welcome the controversy. In an interview with Vanity Fair he mentioned that he hoped that autism activist Jenny McCarthy would picket his book “"That would be really good for me," Leary said "It will help sell more books."

Just a quick comment on the Denis Leary idiotic statements.

I "was" a fan of his edgy comedic style,I'm a current hockey

player, and he's a fan.To have him make these stupid comments to sell books is reprehensible. My family has spent 10's of

thousands dollars on therapy,1000's of hours of sleepless

nights, and we still have hope!I could swear I saw the ignorant

one doing a PSA for autism research.Hey Denise, how about selling a book based on talent, not controversy. Thanks! Erik

I think the media would do the public a great service by not reporting on Mr. Leary's comments. His remarks are nothing more than an effort to get publicity and therefore make money as a result of his shocking and hurtful behavior. The parents of autistic children are dealing with enormous pain and fear for their chldren and to have to hear them ridiculed in this manner is untirely uncivilized. Perhaps if Mr. Leary is ignored he will attempt to make his living without this kind of cruelty.

Perhaps Mr. Leary needs to think about what makes parents of autistic children cry. Oh yes, we often cry at the thought of what might never be. But as we work with teachers and therapists and help our children grow we cry at things that come naturally to other children. Here are some of the moments that made me cry for joy.

The first time my son ran to hug someone rather than run away.

The first time a Mom at the playground said to me, "Really he is autistic? I couldn't tell."

The first time Peter wrote his homework assignments all by himself.

The first time he said, "I can do it all by myself."

The first time he read me a story.

The first time he asked me to play a boardgame.

The first time he asked someone to watch him play because he did not want to be alone.

Mr. Leary needs to spend some time with these incredible children.
