The parents of a newborn baby girl in Bihar, India have taken their lumps and come out swinging. New mom Chandan Devi is 60 years old. Her husband, Kari Ram, is blind. And the couple is living in a relief camp after their village was flooded.
The baby girl, the first for Devi and Ram, is being regarded as a miracle and attracting hundreds of visitors to the camp. Bihar is one of the poorest areas in India, and life only got harder when monsoon rains decimated the area. More than 1,500 people were killed, millions left without homes.
Last month, government officials announced they would be giving additional monies to mothers who gave birth in the relief camps where the displaced are living. As their baby was a girl, Devi and Ram qualify for a higher payout than they would have received for a boy baby.
