You’re at home, the phone rings. Your young son or daughter rushes to answer it. Instead of Granny, Aunt Sally or a credit card company calling, it’s a stern voice warning that Barack Obama is associated to the Bill Ayers. As reported on the Huffington Post, several parents wrote in saying that “their kids were being told, in essence, that the possible next president of the United States associates with terrorist figures.” The McCain camp is still running these robocalls, even though new polls say that 60% of Americans "not a legitimate issue in the presidential campaign." And only 37% thought it was.
One Huffington Post reader wrote in to say, "My daughter answered the phone today and began listening to the most disturbing call regarding bombing and terrorists. She ran with the phone to get me, I heard just the end snippet of the call and immediately called the number cited as responsible…I was so angry and let them have it. I had to explain to my 7-year-old daughter that no one was bombing anyone else. This was a horrific experience."
In 2000, McCain, during the primaries, denounced the use of negative Robocalls when he was the topic of negative calls, but in this campaign, eight years later, he has embraced the practice. But it looks like the calls aren’t working. Even Sarah Palin has stated about the calls that people "get a bit irritated with just being inundated."
No word on when or if the calls will stop. So for now, just tell your kids that you’ll be answering the phone from now on.
