Oh, the intrigue that is today's Daily Palin.
Yet again, Sarah Palin has broken away from the Straight Talk party line and voiced her own opinion.
This time, she's all about constitutional bans on gay marriage. McCain,
for what it's worth, opposes them and wants states to decide. The day
before, she went and dissed robo calls, which John McCain's campaign
has been
forced to use due to a stunning dearth of volunteers. Back home in
Alaska, one veterans group is demanding apologies after her appointee
disagreed with a report detailing shortcomings of how veterans -- including Vietnam veterans! -- have been cared for in the state. She knows veteran care is a big deal for her running mate, right? Or is it that she doesn't care anymore what he thinks?
Has the student maverick outwitted the master maverick and set a course for saving her own political career as McCain's tanks? Or is this a calculated bit in the campaign, a way for McCain to have it both ways with the base and with independents? Slate's John Dickerson helps you decide.
She has opinions! Yet Palin continues to be criticized for not being open. She hasn't released her medical records. And she has yet to hold a press conference. One CBS correspondent begs to differ. In fact, he says only McCain and especially Palin (lately) have stepped up to the mic and free-formed a little. What? About robo calls? Is that working out for the campaign?
We know Palin's always been in favor of the tough, personal attacks. Is this why McCain's campaign has put Obama's connection to Rev. Jeremiah Wright back on the table? Guys, are we jumping the shark?
Of course, maybe that's McCain's strategy for re-capturing the imagination of the
16 million male voters who have stopped voting over the past four decades.
May we recommend he not go with this illegal strategy: pissing off the Russian U.N. ambassador by asking for a donation of between "$35 and $5,000."
Another new tactic to smear Obama? Sending Rudy Giuliani and Mike Huckabee out to talk about the candidate's past drug use (you know the past drug use he wrote about openly in his autobiography? Good one, guys, good one.)
Of course, John Kerry's incontinence joke (at aging candidate John McCain's expense) hasn't gone over so well either. Was it the delivery?
Playing well to an audience of financial analysts, economists and a clueless White House are new proposals for a stimulus package for American taxpayers (read: credit card advance to ourselves!). Whatever it takes, folks, whatever it takes.
