Bipartisan Group Says McCain Would Be Bad for Kids' Health

First Focus, a bipartisan children’s advocacy group, has released a statement warning voters that John McCain’s health care plan would result in millions of American children going without health insurance.

McCain’s proposal centers around a flat tax credit, which would be given to every family, regardless of size or income, to be used to buy health insurance. (The money for these credits would be raised, at least in part, by cutting Medicaid and Medicare.)

First Focus has warned that the tax credit is well below the amount of money required for the average family’s health care needs. Plus, since McCain wouldn't require insurance companies to cover children with pre-existing conditions, it's likely that many of these kids would be denied coverage.

Obama’s plan guarantees that every child will be covered, either privately or publicly, regardless of preexisting conditions.

I keep hoping that when he throws that "five-thousand dollar tax credit to buy your own insurance" line out there, people are well aware of the fact that that isn't nearly enough money to buy a decent insurance policy for most people.  Maybe healthy, single, childless people in their 20's but that's about it!

Great point, Shannon! This is what makes me nervous. If we got insurance through my husband, it would cost $600-$700/month just for me and my daughter. My employer (a non-profit) pays all of my insurance and half of my daughter's. If my org was taxed on that, though, it would be the first thing to get dropped. And 5k/year would be a joke. These politicians are so out of touch with reality.

True, didn't he say during the last debate that the average family policy is about $5800. per year?! So, with his $5000. credit, that sounds great, but the REALITY is that a family policy costs far more than that. We are currently paying almost $1000.00 per month out of pocket for a family plan. The premium goes up every year. We are renters, therefore, our itemizations aren't great enough to write these expenditures off. We take the standard deduction every year! $5000.00 is not incentive enough for me! A total joke! And an insult in that McCain thinks he knows what we are going through!
