Piper Palin Carries a Louis Vuitton Bag - Is it Hers? Does it Matter?

Posted by SunnyChanel

On the heels of the revelation that the Republican National Committee footed the bill for a $150,000 high-end shopping spree for the Sarah Palin clan comes the blogosphere posting, like at Deceiver.com, of this photo of Palin’s 7-year-old daughter walkin’ around sporting a $790 Louis Vuitton Monogran Canvas Montrogueil PM bag.  The question is, is it her bag? Her moms? A random staffer using Piper as their own personal Sherpa? Or maybe it’s a fake? But having such a high profile display of counterfeit contraband would be an even bigger no-no than spending that much on a kid’s bag (one blog is saying the bag is indeed a fake).

But perhaps Piper is just part of the conspicuous consumption LV loving kid trend. Last week I posted a piece on one of the chicks from The Real Housewives of Atlanta and the mom who bought her 11-year-old not one but two LV bags for her birthday. Everyone is entitled to spoil their children if that’s what they’d like to do. But when it comes to politics and trying to prove to the nation that you are just like the small town folks i.e “real Americans” of Joe Six Packs and Hockey Moms ilk, it would be a better message to just carry a stylish tote from Target.

What do you think? Is it her bag? Is it a fake? And does it matter?

You know, I'm as prObama as they come, but I don't really give a whit what the Palins decide to wear or carry (or the Obamas or Bidens or McCains, for that matter.)  I'm pretty sure there just as many conspicuous consumer Dems as GOP'ers.  I do question either side's use of public resources for extravagance, but a little girl carrying a hot bag?  One could get a snapshot of many a child toting his/her parent's bag, phone, briefcase, iPod at any moment in time and it could be misconstrued all over the place...  I will say those Palins are an attractive bunch - very photogenic.  As for the "we're just like you" - any way you slice it, that's disingenuous if taken literally.  All the mainstream candidates should know that they are in very elite, rarefied positions... sure they may share our values and hopes and human interests, but they've got a heck of a lot more STUFF and a much softer cushion at their disposal than we.

What's offensive about this is that 1. Donors who paid money to the McCain campaign no doubt didn't think their money was going towards designer bags for 7 year olds.  And 2. We're in the middle of an economic meltdown similar to the Great Depression.  Image is everything.  You can't campaign about good ole' Joe the Plumber or Six-Pack and then act like an elite millionaire who buys their kids whatever they want.

I know how all you Babblers feel about Palin.  It would be hard not to since you shove it down our throats everyday, but you are really at the bottom of the barrel with this one.

I agree. The bag is a fake. It is a fake, pretending to be the real thing. Much like Palin.

I do believe the Obama girls were photographed carrying Prada bags.  Who gives a hoot?  Does this really affect anyone's vote?  Sheesh.

I agree with Karen. If your campaign is focused on not being elite and this whole, corn-fed all American, average joe thing, then maybe the kid shouldn't be carrying an LV bag.

I find this fake LV way more offensive than the 150,000 dollar wardrobe. Why? Buying fakes simply supports an underground economy full of not-so-nice things like human trafficking and sweat shops. I doubt Michelle would buy a fake. She's way classier than that - and probably knows where that fake comes from.

I was just joking about the fake. Dang. It's probably real, and they probably gave it to her for free, just like all the other celebs. I find the fake handbag/human trafficking link to be a bit tenuous, it sounds like the buying pot supports terrorists link we here about from the bushies.

If it's real, it likely was purchased with what could be considered money Palin more or less stole from a fat cat patron.

If it's fake, it's a violation of copyright, among other things, and is illegal to both sell and own. Any other kid, it might just look materialistically stupid, but in the hands of the daughter of the VP nominee, it's cause for huge alarm, and demonstrates little respect for real products.
