PageOneQ found a mailing from Senator Elizabeth Dole's North Carolina campaign, claiming that challenger, Kay Hagan's, opposition to banning gay marriage will usher in a bold new age of radical homosexual rule in the state. I personally know some queers who fled suburban North Carolina just two years ago due in part to homophobic neighbors, coworkers, shopkeepers, gas station attendants, doctors...you get the idea. I guess they should have stuck around a couple of years for Kay Hagan's debut!
The mailers don't actually look like negative propaganda to me. It's definitely a case of "eye of the beholder." Two male hands sporting wedding rings, romantically entwined, a couple of cake-topper-esque grooms, one on bended knee, just don't scream, "cover the eyes of the children, here comes the radical gay agenda!" It looks more like an invitation to Uncle Bobby's Wedding.
Mostly this kind of stuff just has me scratching my head this year. Didn't we flush out all the homophobic republican base in the last two election cycles? Do you think anyone new will rush to the polls this year to save the mere potential for there to be a North Carolina constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage? Really, republicans. Get some new ideas.
