Palin Busted! New Ethics Complaint Filed

Posted by SunnyChanel

When you are in the crosshairs of an extreme close up, certain blemishes or alledged blemishes can rear their ugly heads, not unlike a festering boil.  Running for one of the highest offices in the land is a guarantee that the close up will be unflinching, often unflattering and that each and every mole (hill) will be turning into Mt. Everest.

This is true for each side of the aisle. But today is one for Team Palin. An official ethics complaint, which was expected, has been filed against Sarah Palin in Alaska. It alleges that Palin “used her official position as governor for personal gain, violating a statute of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act.”

Last week the AP released info that Palin billed Alaska more than $21,000 for flights for her daughters as well charged the state for hotel rooms for them. Check out Jeanne's write up about it here.

Billing for kid's travel is generally acceptable when the children were explicitly invited to the event. But there were allegedly some events where the whole clan wasn’t asked to attend, but Palin still charged the state for the tag along team. And making matters worse, the report said that Palin had expense forms changed to say that it was “official state business”.

"Governor Palin intentionally secured unwarranted benefits for family members, improperly used state property to benefit her personal and financial interests, and illegally altered documents that were the subject of a Public Records request," the complaint states.

Do you think it’s okay for Palin to charge the state for her kid’s travel regardless of their participation?

From an emotional standpoint, I think it's OK for her to charge the state as long as SHE is on official state business. (The Todd Palin dog sled race does not qualify!) However, the fraud element, altering documents, is not OK, regardless of the reason for the travel. She should have pursued changing the guidelines so that school-age children are covered when the governor is traveling for official state business. (Who would argue against that? Am I missing something?)... not just doing it her way and trying to get away with it by lying. Then it smacks of hypocrisy and entitlement.

Sorry, I have to disagree w/Nicole.  When you are employed with a regular employer, and there is an expectation of travel, you don't get to just bring along your husband & kids and expect your employer to foot the bill.  Why should that standard be any different just because you're Governor, or Senator, or whatever?  If Sarah Palin really expects us to believe she's just like us, she'd better start acting like it.

Renee summed it up very well. When my wife travels and I want to bring the kid along, we know we have to pay extra. But maybe we're just mavericks.

I'm with Renee too. If she wanted the kids with her, that cost would be hers to pay.

I don't think she really wanted the kids with her necessarily, she always got them a separate room...

Moviegirl,

If you're going to keep posting that comment, you might want to brush up on the correct use of apostrophes. I know Palin fans aren't big on the learnin' and all, but still.
