They Say: Drinking Coffee While Pregnant Can Affect the Fetus

Posted by SunnyChanel

A new study came out today that makes the claim that pregnant women who drink caffeine, even just one cup of joe a day, are at a higher risk in giving birth to a low birth rate baby. Now, I know every woman is different, but I drank coffee every day while pregnant (with the blessing of my OBGYN, of course) and my daughter was born at 10 ½ pounds. So my personal results were that drinking coffee didn’t do squat in percolating a lighter baby.

A more scientific study than my own anecdotal one, was done by the British Medical Journal where they found that women who drank one or two cups of coffee had a 20% risk of having a low birth weight baby and woman who had two or three cups had a 50% risk. But it’s not just java, they stated that “any source of caffeine, including that from tea, cola, chocolate and some prescription drugs, to relatively slower fetal growth.”

This follows a study in the U.S. in January that linked miscarriages to larger doses of caffeine (two or cups of coffee a day).  To read more about this recent study, click here. And if you’re knocked up you may consider putting down that latte, mocha or cup of Sumatra, you’ll be drinking plenty of coffee once you are a sleep deprived new parent.

Thanks for the heads up! It looks like I uploaded the wrong text, instead of the finished one. I guess I didn't have enough coffee!

So you drank coffee with the ok from your doc-midwife, whatever, but you're telling other pregnant women to put down their coffee?  Ok.  I'm thinking of a word, starts with H and sound like big effing hypocrite.  It's ok for you, but not for other women?

Ah, yes. The ol' "Here's some data you might want to consider." So very very hypocritical. Geez, it's not like shge's slapping lattes out of pregnant women's hands, just offering an interesting study for consideration. Feh.

When I was preggo in 2006-07, I read about another study that indicated a link between caffeine and higher rates of miscarriage. Since my pregnancy was sort of in the realm of the miraculous to begin with (we paid big freakin' money to our IVF doc, plus ALL my docs basically told me I was wasting money and I would not get pregnent -- hah! fooled them!), I wasn't going to do ANYTHING to jeopardize it. It was HELL going without my caffeine! But we got two very respectable weight twins (6 lbs & 4.5 lbs), so well worth it.

If you are interested in the caffeine question, it might be worth it to google caffeine + miscarraige. That plus this link to low birth weight would be enough for me to switch to decaf for a few months.

Wow! Some people have a lot of misplaced anger!!! And they should also learn to read before they open their mouths.

She didn't say she knew about the study when she was pregnant. Nor did she tell anyone else what to do about the new study. In fact she offered herself as an example in case someone wants to disregard the study because they cannot give up their morning cup. That is, in effect, giving you the bad news, with a welcome little dose of "well, it might not be so bad".

I'm wondering ... could the 10-1/2 lb. baby be linked to gestational diabetes that was never diagnosed? If your OB didn't perform a glucose test, I'm also concerned that he/she misled you over the caffeine, too.

Lenny, I'm pretty sure if the tone of this had been:  "I did it and it turned out alright - so y'all do it too!"  you'd have raked her over the coals for that too.

for the record?  I STARTED drinking coffe with my second (had never before been a fan) and drank a LOT.  (without anyone's permission) and he weighed exactly the same as my first son.  I don't know about all these studies.

We are not talking about women drinking a mug full of whiskey or smoking a pack a day, we are discussing (and oh so politely...) a cup of coffee.  I drank 2 cups a day (once the throwing up phase finished in week 17 - and, yes, my doctor said it was fine, and he also told me to take tylenol for the raging headaches) with my first and he was born at a healthy 7 lbs 11 oz; my second pregnancy I could never enjoy a cup of coffee - although I tried - but it tasted sour to me so I gave up trying and he was born the exact same - 7-11 - and, he is also allergic to milk (I take cream in my coffee).  Go figure....  Research is always telling us something - but let us not forget that we are all doing the best we can with what we know and sometimes we still choose to do things others might not agree with.  Just try to be kind with those who make different choices than you - the world is already a bit of a rough ride...

What I think the Sunny is trying to do is start a conversation about caffeine and pregnancy.

Sure a lot women have ingested caffeine and have had perfectly healthy babies, while there are some women that do have bad side effects from ingesting caffeine while pregnant.

There are limitless possibilities as to why caffeine can effect a pregnancy, I'll cite one reason.

At the time of our son's pregnancy we followed the Doctor advice regarding caffeine, which was one cup of coffee a day was okay. My wife doesn't need coffee to function so she was fine with not drinking any at all, however she didn't hesitate with chocolate though.

I think the next time around we will be more aware of her caffeine intake just to be on the safe side.

Ha ha! I drank one cup every day, and my baby was born at 11 pounds, 6 ounces. And I didn't have diabetes. I was tested. Why are people so mean in these comment boards?
